VHS : Treasure Island (1990)
This is indeed the very best film version of Robert Louis Stevenson's definitive pirate adventure ever made. Christian Bale plays the young Jim Hawkins and Charlton Heston is Long John Silver, and both are excellent. Add Christopher Lee as Blind Pew and the rest of a terrific cast including Oliver Reed, Clive Wood, and Julian Glover among the many actors that bring the story to life. Filmed on location in Jamaica and on the awesome ship Hispaniola, the scenery and cinematography are marvelous.

And the soundtrack is performed by The Cheiftains!
It is the best pirate soundtrack ever, adding great drama and realism to the proceedings, since the music seems so timely for the period.

Heston's Long John Silver is sensational, and his son Fraser's direction is ... Read More

I first saw this movie in the theater as a boy with my father. It's stuck with me ever since and remains on the list of my top ten favorite films. Fortunately I was able to pick up an old VHS copy several years ago.

Remote Mountains, Eerie Mines, Mysterious Bagpipe Music Drifting through the Misty Woods, Rapelling into Bottomless Mine Shafts, Crashing Float Planes into Frigid Lakes, Gold!,... What more can you ask for in an adventure film? I never tire of watching this film. It is very UNIQUE! Much of the movie is filmed in actual mine shafts. It is dark, eerie, and mysterious.

General Plot (Warning some spoilers!):

The film begins with a man being pulled by the ankles from rubble inside a mine shaft by another man. You think he is being rescued. Instead ... Read More

I admit I haven't read the book Needful Things, but this movie just seems like its missing something. It starts out well, with a look at small town life. The scene where Ed Harris, as the sheriff, and Max von Sydow as Leland Gaunt, the antique shop owner/Satan, meet and share some pie is almost sublime. But then the movie gets silly, with Ole Scratch turning the townspeople violently against each other by providing all the things they've ever wanted most. The acting is good, though Sydow really chews the scenery by the end. Overall, fair time killer.

As an avid reader of the stories of Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, this movie exceeded my expectations. The screenplay, although somewhat modified from the original novel, was a fine adaptation to the TV film medium. The characters were both real and well acted by this international cast. I especially enjoyed the portrayals of Shelock Holmes and Dr. John Watson by Actors Heston and Johnson respectively. This movie is a must see for all fans of Sherlock Holmes.
