VHS : A Star Is Born
I was a teenager when this came out and everyone went to see it. I was not very critical then, but remember thinking that this was nauseating. Barbra Streisand is undeniably talented but incapable of setting her vanity aside in the interest of making a decent movie. And the camera is cruel. She's too ugly to have ever been convincing as an object of passionate desire in any movie. On stage at a distance, she could get away with it. In a movie like Funny Girl, where the guy was interested in her earning potential (and the director kept her monumental ego under control), her looks were not a hindrance. Her version of "A Star is Born" is simply a ridiculous waste of time. Don't like those kinds of songs, either, though I know some people do.

VHS : Lakota Woman - Siege at Wounded Knee
This movie is an excellent dramatization of the book and the events. So many movies about Native Americans end in 1890. This movie shows the life of a contemporary Native American girl/woman and the continuing Native American struggle for land, dignity, respect and human rights.

As Daniel White Hat said, "This isn't history. It's still with us."

VHS : Looking Glass War
The Looking Glass War is a mediocre adaptation of John Le Carre's novel of the same name. The acting is stilted and awkward, the screenplay poor, and the whole thing feels contrived, which it is. Even Anthony Hopkins' performance is poor. Bought it, watched it, put it up on eBay.

If you are looking for John Le Carre stories that have successfully made the jump from print to the silver screen, you want:

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold - Richard Burton is stunning in his portrayal of a burned-out spy.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - The BBC series starring Alec Guiness. I made the mistake of starting this one evening around 9 PM planning to watch two chapters and go to bed. I finally got to bed at 2:30 AM, having watched the entire thing.

VHS : Truman
I'm not worried about actors and directors. I want to know something new when I view a movie like this, and this was an eye opener!! It is a must see for all of us boys and girls who were raised in homes of FDR haters. Guess there aren't many left today. Not that it is about FDR, but it will open your eyes about Truman, who he was, and his wisdom which most under-estimated. You know a little old haberdasher.

VHS : Citizen Cohn
This movie is a complete joke. Whether you loved Cohn or whether you hated him, this movie is a farce from start to finish. I happened across the film when it was being shown on A&E one night and dispersed between parts of the film were several gentlemen in the studio who knew Cohn personally and who commented how inaccurate the film was and how it beared no reality to Cohn's real life.

Cohn's delusions of the Rosenberg's was absurd. Trying to garner sympathy for the traitors that gave atomic weapon secrets to the Soviets was the height of lunacy. This is a terrible, terrible movie and I caution anyone who wants the real story about Cohn not to watch this trash.

VHS : Conspiracy
This film takes place in one place only and with a limited set of characters. It revolves around the Wannsee Conference, a meeting held at the highest levels of the German government and the Nazi Party. The conference brings together lawyers, technocrats, military (SS), and bureaucrats who, after being skillfully guided by Reichsprotector Reinhard Heydrich, set the stage for the mass extermination of the Jewish population in Europe. The issue is settled much as a trade treaty or a new public relations campaign might be. The scariest part of the story is how mundane all this was. The decision was made and carried out and that was the end of it, just a lot of numbers and trains and changes in official policy to these people.

Evil does not always wear a cloak and show off fangs... sometimes it just has ... Read More

VHS : King of the Gypsies
This movie was just outstanding and an overlooked and forgotten classic. The movie was just a fascinating look at the world of the Gypsies in America. A very young Eric Roberts shines as the grandson of the King of the Gypsies brilliantly played by the legendary Sterling Hayden. Judd Hirsh of Taxi fame is great as Roberts buffoon of a father who's jealous and brutish ways tear his family apart. You will also see Susan Sarandon and a very young Brooke Shields.

This movie ranks right up there with the best of the best in my opinion. The costumes, the cinematography and the casting was tops. Combine all that with an interesting and compelling story and you have a classic film.

VHS : Somebody Has to Shoot the Picture
The same, old, tired leftish cliche: evil, corrupt police and prison officials, noble (and, of course, actually innocent) death-row murderer -- you get the picture. This type of political advocacy will only appeal to those of a similar mind-set. I found it tiresome.
