VHS : Mortal Storm
This WWII political drama starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, along with very young Robert Stack, Dan Dailey, Robert Young and of course, the Wizard of Oz, Frank Morgan, who is fabulous in this dramatic role, has been overlooked by the wizards of Hollywood. Due to the overall excellence of the film, great acting and wonderful scenes of Jimmy and Margaret "skiing" in the Alps at night, it should be listed, at least, as one of the best 100 films.

VHS : It's a Wonderful Life
Frank Capra's meditation on the connections each man builds to those around him is the pure, distilled essence of holiday spirit. In a world that's forever beating us down with reminders of our isolation and of the lack of meaning in our lives, this is a bright and shiny rebuttal.

I don't know that anyone but Jimmy Stewart could play the nice guy who always does the right thing and inject that character with the darkness necessary to turn a schmaltzy premise into a profound statement of each man's place in his world. A great supporting cast (including Thomas Mitchell, Gloria Grahame, Ward Bond, Henry Travers and Beulah Bondi) led by a brilliant director. Nicely remastered print. And while the extra features were just lifted from 80s TV broadcasts, they do have interesting information in ... Read More

Paul Tibbets-Enola Gay both names that mean part of the history. This is an absorbing subject, carefully handled about the officer who piloted and drooped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
Even I think Taylor wasn't the most appropriate actor for this role, ( I just can think in three names for that moment: Robert Donat, Fredric March and Michael Redgrave) and the film surely would have elevated to a major status.
The only default to my mind is the real nightmare derived from this action; the awful sequels that surrounded the mind and personality of Tibbets are simply absent. There was a very long introduction showing the backgrounds.
A well supporting cast accompanied him. Good point for Melvin Frank.
Two years later after this film was released, the American journalist William ... Read More

I recently purchased this classic black and white movie starring Cary Grant, and I really liked it. I had seen it many times when I was younger but the last time I had seen it was several years ago late at night on some satellite channel. When I first watched this dvd I realized that the version I had always seen on T.V. had been edited. The difference between the dvd and T.V. version were that the introductory screen credits to the movie was a Halloween cartoon and there were several other scenes that had been edited or deleted altogether. There were a few special features but nothing too exciting.
I would have rated this movie as perfect except for the fact that it has outdated slapstick humor and of course it is only b&w (black and white). I would have preferred for it to be available as ... Read More

How can Jerry Lewis be a babysitter for a Hollywood starlet? This is the question you will find out when you watch this 1958 classic comedy. Jerry is a TV repairman when he receives the startling news that he is about to be a babysitter of TRIPLETS! I laughed out loud when I watched this on my DVD/Video player. You will enjoy every minute of this Jerry Lewis comedy from nearly 50 years ago!!

I was a teenager when this came out and everyone went to see it. I was not very critical then, but remember thinking that this was nauseating. Barbra Streisand is undeniably talented but incapable of setting her vanity aside in the interest of making a decent movie. And the camera is cruel. She's too ugly to have ever been convincing as an object of passionate desire in any movie. On stage at a distance, she could get away with it. In a movie like Funny Girl, where the guy was interested in her earning potential (and the director kept her monumental ego under control), her looks were not a hindrance. Her version of "A Star is Born" is simply a ridiculous waste of time. Don't like those kinds of songs, either, though I know some people do.

VHS : Dark Night of Scarecrow
This was well worth the wait. The picture is clear, crisp, and vivid. This 2-DVD set delivers the 3-part "Scarecrow of Romney Marsh" (I sat glued to the TV and thrilled to every minute of it as a kid) and the feature-length movie version that later surfaced on cable and elsewhere.

As Leonard Maltin mentions in his commentary, the "movie" version was so skillfully edited that you won't notice what's missing until you watch the 3-parter and take careful notes.

The justly-acclaimed actor Patrick McGoohan shines here. How many actors have pulled off THREE indelibly-stamped characters (The Scarecrow plus The Prisoner - Complete Series Megaset (40th Anniversary Edition) and Secret Agent (aka Danger Man) - The Complete Collection Megaset 2007)? He plays the Vicar / Scarecrow as an emotionally balanced ... Read More
