Excellent performance by all the actors and opera singers. It was a very good idea to transport the classic opera into a movies version. This adaptation is not new, nevertheless, is a masterpiece for all times. Congratulations !

This movie is a cinematic rendering of Primo Levi's diary of how he traveled back to Turin Italy after spending over one year in Auschwitz. Some parts of it are too sentimentalized and others don't truly show the conditions as they were just after the war.

The Auschwitz camp was way to neat and clean, and the flashback scenes were did not convey the brutality of the camps. That aside, the rest of the movie is well done and thought out. The cinematic ambiance was spot on and the dilemma that awaited the 'survivors' is well explained.

It is hard to make this type of movie because you can either cartoonize the 'bad guys' and over romanticize the good guys. Turturro does a great low key performance of Primo Levi (who was a very shy and reticent personality) that closely follows ... Read More

I luckily discovered a copy of this excellent film in a discount bin in Mexico, with Spanish subtitles. The DVD compression is excellent and represents the full vision. The Spanish subtitles faithfully and fully follow the dialogue, which is poignant and profound and powerful.

We should be so lucky one day to produce a culture capable of producing a film such as this one, full of the parallax of multiple viewpoints of life, as full as James Joyce`s Ulysses or Kurasawa`s Roshamon in its multiple parallax, each viewpoint presented with its own validation and reality, across several generations. Especially moving are the recollections of the old man, and amazing flashbacks to his youth, and how the farm has fallen from wartime with its barnful of cattle to the present barnful of doves, as the sons have ... This film shows promise, but the transfer is so abysmal that it completely ruins the viewing experience. The sound is especially bad and annoying. Also, the film doesn't have the "feel" of being a complete creative entity. I have read that it was originally released in an extended version, which I would very much like to see.
