VHS : Fantasia (Walt Disney's Masterpiece)
I have to admit, I'm an avid listener of classical music. So it's a small wonder why Disney's Fantasia is one of my favorite films. Every music sequence is pure gold (except maybe the Pastoral sequence).

Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach = My second favorite sequence, it is a mixture of abstract colors & images, live action orchestral playing, and Stokowski's acclaimed orchestration of Bach's organ music.

Nutcracker Suite by Peter Illich Tchaikovsky = Although I'm not a fan of Tchaikovsky's ballet music, this one is very good and entertaining. The dancing of the fairies and flowers and mushrooms make for a heck of a good time for the whole family.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Paul Dukas = This is probably the most exciting rendition ... Read More

VHS : Green Hornet-13 Episodes
`The Green Hornet' is, overall, a pretty good serial. Certainly it is a darn sight better than the superhero movies made since about, say, 2005, when suddenly Batman was willing to confess his true identity to a deputy DA just because he has the hots for her, or since 2006, when we learned that Superman was a dead-beat dad and a stalker (and don't get me started on the Fantastic Four or `Spider-Man 3': blech!). `The Green Hornet' features a hero unencumbered by ridiculous modern angst and subplots, who is good in a fight, yet is only able to perform feats that actual human beings could conceivably perform.

This serial has a good plot, or rather a series of good plots, that are much more grounded in reality than most other serials. It does not involve super-powers, magic, outer space, ... Read More

VHS : The Oregon Trail
Johnny Mack Brown plays an unusually dapper fur trapper hired to investigate a series of attacks preventing wagon trains from reaching the Oregon territories. He joins up with the most beleaguered wagon train in history, which spends several sequential episodes trying to get out of the same dusty town. Whenever the train starts moving, it falls under attack by Indians or stampeding cattle or some other stock footage, which digital technology makes even easier to spot.

Don't try to watch more than one or two chapters at a time, because this serial bears the marks of the form. Serials were a unique format completely beholden to the circumstances under which they were viewed. There was no guarantee that viewers attended the theater the previous week, so every installment contains a certain ... Read More

I've had an enduring crush on that golden-haired Adonis, Bomba the Jungle Boy, since I first beheld him back in the late 40s. Watching this video brings back the joys of studying Johnny Sheffield, who was so captivating as Boy, in the Tarzan movies. Here you see Boy all grown up--and wooo, is he one sexy young hunk! He was the Brad Pitt pin-up of the late 40s and 50s. Although the Bomba movies were made on a modest scale, they're still charming, harmless entertainments for the whole families. Bomba never gave his female co-stars even a peck on the cheek. His sole goal was to escort the femme star to safety and of couse the heroines were forever wandering off alone into the jungle or diving into alligator-infested water. At the center of them all is the beautiful, talented, charismatic Johnny Sheffield who retired back in the mid ... Read More

VHS : Flash Gordon-12 Episodes
This serial ran in theaters then was resurrected on television back in the 1950s. It disappeared and finally, thanks to DVDs, it has reappeared to be viewed in the comfort of ones home. The picture quality is very good, but not great. This does not deter from the fun of watching this dated but enjoyable serial. The one complaint I have is it is not clear how to navigate to the second half of the episodes. The episodes are divided into two halves, six at a time. It's a bit confusing finding how to get to the second six. Still, once you've got that down, it becomes a pleasure to watch Buster Crabbe work his way through all those cliff hanging episodes. The most fun is to simply watch one episode a night or week, then come back for more.
It's a way to go back to the past and see just how silly some serials can be and still have ... Read More
