VHS : O Brother Where Art Thou
Excellent interpretation of Homer's Odyssey with a rare accurate portrayal of the South of the 1930s. Excellent character actors and outstanding music played in the period style.

VHS : The Big Lebowski
I love this movie. In my opinion, it's hands-down the best comedy ever made. These extras are LAME though. Stop raping my wallet, Universal! Get the Coens involved and give us fans some worthwhile extras. This aggression will not stand. Put out one more lousy revamp of the same old thing again and you're entering a world of pain... a world of pain.

VHS : Blood Simple
This early 1980s film started the Coen brothers journey into one of the best filmmaking teams ever.

I have been wanting to see this movie for a long time and was happy I landed on this copy. While it is a good transfer to DVD, some of the others who commented on this said many scenes were deleted from the original. Since it was my first time to view this, I loved it and was totally impressed, now I want to see the original in its entirety.

The Coen brothers always add a sense of "weirdness" to their films, making them totally unique. This one will keep you interested also. I rate this my third favorite Coen brothers film behind No Country for Old Men and Fargo.

The movie has its gore and very well done.

Briefly, a Texas bar owner, Marty ... Read More

VHS : Raising Arizona
There was a time, many many years ago, before National Treasure, Ghostrider and Bangkok Dangerous, that Nicholas Cage was in the greatest movie of all time. That movie, was Raising Arizona. If you haven't seen it, please start a Netflix account right now and queue up 4 movies and watch in this order:

1st - National Treasure (wow, did I just sit through that?)
2nd - Ghostrider (wow, someone in Hollywood funded this?)
3rd - Bangkok Dangerous (wow, this is on DVD already? I saw it just opened last week in the theater???)

at this point, you are going to want to jump out of a window, but before you do, there is 1 more movie you have to watch......

4th - Raising Arizona (my god, this is the greatest movie of all time!!!!)

VHS : The Man Who Wasn't There
I was really excited about this movie. First of all it's a Coen film. Second of all James Gandolfini is in the film; not to mention Scarlett Johansson and Frances McDormand. Sure, Billy Bob Thornton is the star, and I like him (don't love him) but the other four selling points were much stronger. On top of all that it is a film noir, and lately I've been on a real film noir kick. Sure, I've seen quite a few that have been less than impressive (`Devil in a Blue Dress') but there have been enough good ones to keep my appetite wet.

Sadly, `The Man Who Wasn't There' is not one of them.

The problem with `The Man Who Wasn't There' doesn't really fall in lines of scripting, for I actually felt that the story was really well done. It doesn't really fall in the lines of acting either, ... Read More

VHS : Miller's Crossing
I had seen Fargo, and was prepped to have a good time with Miller's Crossing. I knew it was meant to be a takeoff on film noir, so I didn't expect great art. Just some fun.

Nope. Even with the stellar acting power of Gabriel Byrne and Albert Finney, this souffle falls flat. There is no -- as in NO -- plot to follow. All you see are guys dressed up like 30's mobsters, trying to talk tough and clever. But their lines aren't actually tough, and they certainly aren't clever.

Halfway in, I commented to my wife, "It's kind of hard to follow," to which she said, It's impossible. Nothing's happening." We popped the DVD out at that point, and put in another movie. Maybe if I'd stuck it through to the end, some little thing would have actually happened. But that's not the point of ... Read More
