VHS : House of Dracula
Erle C. Kenton directed this superior follow-up to "House of Frankenstein" and closed the lid on Universal's monster franchise. "House of Dracula" (1945) remains among the studio's better sequels, with effective gothic atmosphere and taut pacing. Onslow Stevens' sympathetic performance as the dedicated yet doomed Dr. Edelman holds the film together - memorably assisted by John Carradine's Dracula, Lon Chaney Jr.'s Wolf Man and (all too briefly) Glenn Strange's Frankenstein Monster. Due to budgetary shortcuts, the disappointing climax is mostly comprised of stock footage from 1942's "The Ghost of Frankenstein."

VHS : Island of Lost Souls
I can only guess. It's not released due to hints of beastiality in the movie Island of Lost Souls??? IF so that's just rubbish.

Island of Lost Souls is a great, classic Friday night B&W horror flick that no collection should be without. Period. But we are forced to have a VHS or cheap bootleg. Mystery Of the Wax Museum is hardly a point of discussion here, a nice to have, but Island is a MUST HAVE!

Here is exactly what we need in a collection:
Island Of Lost Souls
Murders In The Zoo
House Of Horrors
The Mad Ghoul

Now how cool of a collection would that be???

HELLO Universal!!! Anyone home??

VHS : House of Frankenstein
Director Erle (not a typo!) C. Kenton went all out on this 1944 black-and-white film to present a Frankenstein movie which all horror fans could embrace, regardless of their preference for a particular monster. Here, we get Dracula (John Carradine), Lawrence Talbot/The Wolfman (Lon Chaney, Jr.), and Frankenstein himself (Glenn Strange)!

As if that were not enough, this cake is superbly iced with Boris Karloff (as the chief protagonist, Doctor Niemann), the lovely Anne Gwynn (Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe - The Complete Saturday Morning Serial), George Zucco (playing the snake oil sideshow man, Doctor Lampini), Lionel Atwill (cast as Arnz), and J. Carrol Naish ( Dr. Renault's Secret) as Daniel, Niemann's hunch-backed, Igor-like assistant! In addition to the monsters, we get a band of Gypsies, ... Read More

VHS : Ghost of Frankenstein
Exit Karloff enter Chaney Jr. in the role of the monster! 'Ghost of Frankenstein' has the great sets and the atmosphere but, it lacks Karloff's depth in the monster department. Chaney Jr. is stiff as the monster and so enters the beginning of the brainless robot monster that inhabits the 'Frankenstein' films hereafter. Although this is not a classic, it is a very entertaining installment in the series. Lugosi,Atwill and Hardwicke..they're all here in this low budget fright fest which was one of the first cheap 40's Universal horrors. This is available on DVD in the Frankenstein Legacy collection and on a double bill with 'Son of Frankenstein'. The DVD transfers are very good. I rate this film 3 1/2 stars

VHS : You're Telling Me (1934)
W.C. Fields takes some getting use to. When I was much younger I enjoyed watching many of the great comedians from Fields' era. I was\am devoted to watching Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Harold Lloyd, Bob Hope, and Buster Keaton. But for some reason W.C. Fields didn't interest me much. I had difficulty understanding the persona, finding the humor in his work. It should be pointed out I was only 3 or 4 years old at the time. In fact I really didn't become a fan until I was about 20. But now that I do understand his comedy, I think few people are as funny.

"You're Telling Me" was made in 1934 and directed by Erle C. Kenton, who's name means nothing to me, but maybe it does to you. By 1934 the Fields persona had been in place; the drinking, the one-liners, the disinterest with children and animals, it was all there. The ... Read More

VHS : Abbott & Costello: Hit the Ice
Made at the height of Bud and Lou's popularity, "Hit the Ice" is a very fun time for fans. Set during winter in Sun Valley, there are some great routines mixed with some of their best slapstick in this one.

Flash (Abbott) and Tubby (Costello) are a couple of photographers who get duped into helping with a bank heist when a gangster named Silky (Sheldon Leonard) thinks they're the two guns he's sent for. Of course the boys have to find the real crooks to avoid jail and it's off to the slopes in Sun Valley. Patrick Knowles is a doctor being duped by Silky and Elyse Knox is the nurse who suspects something is amiss and tries to warn him.

Once in Sun Valley, Tubby goes goofy about lovely Marcia (Ginny Simms). Simms was very popular during the early 1940's and does a lovely job on several songs. Her charachter, Marcia, knows ... Read More
