VHS : Millhouse - A White Comedy
I saw this film only once -- on CBC television's "The Passionate Eye" -- in 1992, but I will always remember it. It was the first time I learned of Nixon's dirty tricks campaigns against Jerry Vorhees and Helen Cahagan-Douglas in the 1940's and the 1950s. There is also some interesting stuff on Nixon's role in the Hiss trial. The film is both irreverant and serious at the same time. I hope and pray that the executors of the de Antonio estate have the good sense of re-releasing this film on DVD.

VHS : In the King of Prussia
In the King of Prussia is an unusual little niche film that recounts the tale of the "Plowshares Eight", a group of anti-nuclear weapons protesters who break into a General Electric-run plant in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania in 1980.

Once inside, the group of men and women (including brothers Phil and Dan Berrigan) smeared blood over nuclear nosecones, and attacked the equipment with hammers.

This gutsy act (Dan Berrigan once said, "If you want to follow Jesus, you better look good on wood") was followed by a high-profile trial presided over by an unsympathetic judge.

The film is sparse, utilizing a theatre-like courtroom setting. Martin Sheen, in self-referential irony, plays the judge as a toe-the-line absolutist. But where his character adheres to the political ... Read More

VHS : Plot to Kill JFK: Rush to Judgment
Over the decades, there's been so much propaganda on both sides of the JFK assassination argument, that it could be off-putting to anybody, espcially the novice.

But the strength of RUSH TO JUDGMENT is it's timing, the period, coming just a couple of years after the assassination... True, as it was so early, not as much was known then--- but sometimes less is more; what you have here are just fresh, unpolished, unrehearsed, raw and chilling interviews with the witnesses at a time LONG before the whole topic had become the lost-in-time cliche it seems to now be.

The quiet simplicity, lack of pretense, the (then) newness of the subject-matter, and the flavor of the era drive home this documentary's point more effectively and convincingly--- and hit a far more macabre note -- ... Read More

One of the reviewers said that if you like combat footage then this is the documentary for you. THAT IS COMPLETELY FALSE! I do not know what he was smoking at the time. This documentary is 95% footage of political dialog and 5% maybe of actual field footage.

I m not saying this isn't a film worth watching as that would depend on your interest. It has a great historical background of how everything came about over there and where it went, and who was involved. But if your looking for a lot of combat footage this isn't the film for you.

5.Point of Order starring: Roy M. Cohn, Joseph McCarthy, Joseph N. Welch

VHS : Point of Order
First released in 1964, this invaluable piece of visual history places the fall of McCarthy-ism in lucid, dramatic context. While most of us have seen Boston lawyer (and Army counsel) Joseph Welch's pivotal repudiation of McCarthy ("At long last, Senator...") few remember what led up to it, which only heightens its history-making impact. It's fascinating to see smarmy McCarthy counsel Roy Cohn go up against Welch and Senator Stuart Symington on charges of currying blatant favoritism for Army enlistee G. David Schine (Cohn's lover). Watching McCarthy himself is spooky, as we have to wonder how a man like this could amass such destructive power. A must-see.

VHS : Mccarthy: Death of a Witch Hunter
Apparently, previous reviewers of this documentary of the McCarthy "red-baiting" hunt for communists in the US, including Lucille Ball (!) for heaven's sake, did not live through the actual dark & horrible time period when these shameful indictments of innocent US citizens occured. At least their reviews here make very light of a deadly serious politically traumatizing "witch hunt."

Joseph McCarthy et al are responsible for ruining the lives of so many. Actor John Garfield, for instance, after being blacklisted as a communist sympathizer never recovered from it & actually died.

Lucille Ball's ONLY association with anything communist was the fact that she was the wife of Desi Arnaz, a Cuban who was anything but communist! Yet she was devastated by being named on McCarthy's blacklist. ... Read More
