VHS : George Balanchine's The Nutcracker
This is really the best production of this ballet that I've ever seen! The costumes, staging and ballet are first rate. Macaulay Culkin is adorable as the Nutcracker Prince. It's also nice that the characters Marie and the Prince are performed by children.People with kids who like coloring pictures will be pleased to find a coloring book that is based on this production. I first saw this movie back when my grandmother bought it on VHS in '92. For the first few minutes, I knew I was going to love this movie. It has become one of my favorites since then. Whoopi plays Deloris Van Cartier, who is a Las Vegas lounge singer whose boyfriend is in the local mob. She walks in and sees him killing a previous employer who went to report him to the police. Deloris gets scared immediately, runs away from Vince's (Harvey Keitel) buddies who are told to "take care of it", meaning kill Deloris. She reports the incident to the police, and the lieutenant gets her into hiding for a short time until Vince goes to trial. Deloris is reluctant, but agrees to go. She is put in a place where Vince wouldn't even think she's at: a convent. She meets with the strict Reverend Mother (played ... Read More

VHS : Faerie Tale Theatre - Rumpelstiltskin
I have been a fan of the Faerie Tale Theater series since I was a little kid, and I just recently was given the DVD box set of all the movies for Christmas.

I love these movies! Shelly Duvall is a genious for bringing her magical creations to the screen. They are so fun to watch and bring so many memories from my childhood back to me!

However, this specific story upsets me every time I see it! I have never understood how anyone could actually enjoy this tale. Shelley Duvall plays the millers daughter, who is handed over to the greedy, annoying, money hungry King played by Ned Beatty, after the King is told she can spin straw into gold. Well, Shelley Duvall CAN'T spin straw into gold and she is honest with the king, but he warns her that he will kill her if she doesn't spin it ... Read More

A total joy. Jacques is an inspiration and the video captures the unbounded enthusiasm he projects. Good for any audience. Children will ask how they can be part of his project; adults will, too.

VHS : Gypsy (1993)
It looked good on paper: Powerhouse performer Bette Midler playing the most famous role in musical theater, directed by Emile Ardolino, the guy who turned "Dirty Dancing" into a national phenomenon. So what went wrong? The truth is, Midler simply isn't a good enough actress to capture the subtleties of as complex a character as Momma Rose. She's all big eyes and broad gestures, waving arms and manic mood swings; it's a community theater performance, going for the obvious at every turn. Is Rose manic and driven at times? Yes, of course; her father calls her a "crazy woman" in an early scene. But from her first entrance, Midler seems to have confused "powerhouse" with "bulldozer." She spits her lines out in rapid succession, with all the bawdiness with which she tells her famous Sophie Tucker jokes in concert. But ... Read More

I cannot tell you how much I adore this movie. Meryl Streep never ceases to amaze me, and the entire cast, I could rave on and on and on about them. I just simply adore this, and the music itself is FANTASTIC. i don't know why I had not heard of it sooner or why more people do not do it. I cannot recommend this enough!
