VHS : A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
This is such a great movie. I am really surprised that it is not on DVD yet. As far as I can tell, Fox Movie Channel is the only network that plays it and that is not offered with our cable package. I would buy a couple of copies if it were on DVD.

VHS : On the Waterfront
Marlon Brando, who won an Oscar for this role, changed the face of acting in the mid 20th century.

He's brilliant, inspired, and completely magnificent. And who hasn't heard, "I coulda been a contender, I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am."

This movie is a classic, a movie that should be in everyones collection.

They just don't make them like Brando, anymore.

two good reasons to see this, and,
I'm afraid, about the only ones. Many viewers will be haunted by Walker's performance as a charming,
doomed young man -- you'll remember him long after you've
forgotten almost everything else about this movie. And Harry Carey is such a
good actor that he can say, "I fought under that Flag -- I'll not
fire on it now" and sound convincing, rather than ridiculous.

4.A Streetcar Named Desire starring: Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, Karl Malden, Rudy Bond

VHS : A Streetcar Named Desire
Elia Kazan's adaptation of "A Streetcar Named Desire" is magnificent and ahead of its time with the issues it addresses. His interpretation of Tenessee Williams' classic play is powerful and dramatic. Kazan employs a fantastic cast. Marlon Brandon plays an impeccable Stanley with intense emotions and a strong disposition. Blanche is also portrayed very well. Vivien Leigh brings Blanche fragility and vulnerability and she interacts with the other characters flawlessly. Though her emotions are slightly over the top, this brings life to her character. Overall this rendition of Williams' classic is a must see and is highly recommended

VHS : Splendor in the Grass
Thankfully, I did not grow up in this era, and everything I have read and heard about it is obviously not entertaining. It is, therefore, even more amazing to me how entertaining this movie is for me. First of all, the chemistry between the beautiful Natalie Wood and the handsome Warren Beatty is off the charts. They are so young, especially her, but they are such masters of their craft even at their young ages. This movie has the depressing events of the times woven through the lives of the characters such as people jumping from windows after the stock market crashed.

First love, young oppressed love is the central theme. "Good girls" and "bad girls" and "boys will be boys" relay the double standard message of the times and of the movie. I can almost feel the pain of Bud and Deanie who are so ... Read More

It amazes me that no-one seems to undertake a new production of this brilliant story. The movie only deals with a small part - if you've seen the movie, you must read the book.

This is Andy Griffith like you've never seen him before or since. This is no Sheriff of Mayberry character. Definitely worth seeing.

8.Pinky starring: Jeanne Crain, Ethel Barrymore, Ethel Waters, William Lundigan, Basil Ruysdael

A good story and fine performances from two old stage pros (Ethel Waters and Ethel Barrymore). Jeanne Crain as a black girl strains credibility, no doubt. But the ensemble scenes of white bigots and the way a handful of whites stand up to them is very anticipatory of To Kill a Mockingbird. A powerful film in the end.

VHS : America America (B&W)
This is a extremely powerful and absorbing movie that is recommended to anyone who has ever had a hunger to achieve something worthy.
It is rightfully called a masterpiece by many.

The characters are very believable and interesting. One can feel the absolute frustration in the main character. He is an individual with obvious flaws which make him ever so much human and not some 2 dimensional hero. Along his struggle-filled journey, he meets a kaleidoscope of other complex characters, all very well portrayed.

The soundtrack is very evocative yet very subtle and adds just the right flavor to the movie like oregano to spaghetti sauce.

The pace of the movie is at times slow, at times fast but the tempo is always appropriate for the scene.

This is one of those rare movies ... Read More
