VHS : That Certain Age
Deanna Durbin stars in yet another hit as Alice, a girl stuck between childhood and adulthood. One cannot ignore that these pre-teen or teenage years were treated a bit differently than when this film was made, so the kids might behave younger than they would in today's society, but they still deal with similar issues. For example, a writer friend of her father's comes to stay with the family. Vincent Bullitt (Melvyn Douglas) is a charismatic, no-nonsense kind of man that treats Alice as older than her parents do which makes her develop a crush on him. In turn, she does all she can to win his affections, even at the expense of hurting her semi-boyfriend Ken (Jackie Cooper).

One can easily relate to the story, as everyone has grown up and experienced crushes. What makes a trite ... Read More

What horror lurks deep beneath a volcano? At least in Mexico, the answer is giant scorpions! Another great classic movie with the giant monsters running amok, eating people, causing great distruction, and then walla! the hero (and usually scientist) comes to the rescue of not only killing off the beasts, but winning the woman at the same time. These old classics are corny by todays standards and special affects, but you can't beat them. These giant scorpions are pretty decent for the clay / stop action photography of the time, and there are even a few other interesting beasts under the volcano like giant worms, and some other bug that chases the little stow-away boy. Just love the sounds they have also as giant critters...makes me wonder if they make sounds now but we just can't hear them cause they're ... Read More

VHS : Big Wheel
I saw The Big Wheel as a kid and remembered that not only was it a good, albeit "simple" Mickey Rooney movie, it was also an interesting movie about vintage car racing. I bought this movie to watch with my 83 year old mother who loves old movies. My fear was that the movie though good in it's time, would not relate to today's standards of high drama. I'll have to admit that the plot was simple, yet enjoyable as a typical Mickey Rooney flic. But what was most fascinating to me was the excellent historical footage of Indy car races during the 1940's. If you think that race car drivers are courageous heroes today, watch this movie. I am a race car fan of all types and can not believe the lack of saftey features during that time. Forget about fire retardant driving suits with gloves etc. These guys wore short sleeve everyday shirts and ... Read More
