VHS : Last of Mrs Cheyney (1937)
Character superstar Jessie Ralph steals the show in this otherwise stilted film version of a theatrical hit. So many of the great early 20th Century plays, translated into films (mostly by MGM!) stand up even today but unfortunately this isn't one of them... Perhaps it's the iconic Joan Crawford's presence...she's at the height of her haute-phoniness in this one, although she LOOKS spectacular.

William Powell must have been fulfilling contractual obligations for appearing in this one...he's completely wasted.

This film belongs to the character actors who comprise its supporting cast...notably the aforementioned Ralph and Nigel Bruce & Frank Morgan.

Worth seeing as a time capsule of legendary silver screen personalities...otherwise forgettable.

I can't really add much except to say that not only is this one of the black & white films that really holds up, but Rosalind Russell is very powerful and so convincing in the role that I cried! Interesting to compare to the later Joan Crawford vehicle. Joan was great too but hers was a wonderfully angry interpretation. Russell's is way more nuanced so that the very ending is really touching. I'm a huge Joan Crawford fan but if I had to say which was better...well, Joan's is really good but Russell's is awsome. Also, as a screenplay the Russell version is much more textured and worldly. Joan's version much more insuler.

This is such an incredible movie, at least as good as any movie of today. People who complain that silent movies are boring or obsolete clearly haven't watched any or seen an incredible one like this. There are enough periodic text blocks on the screen to convey what's going on or what someone just said to follow along just fine, and the rest of the time yoiu can follow along by watching the interactions between the characters, facial expressions, and body language. Some silent movies may be overacted, but this one isn't; maybe people of today have just forgotten how to process emotions and a story through nonverbal channels, or what a truly expressive face looks like.

This was the first Valentino movie I saw, and now I like him even more. He looks even more beautiful in motion than he does in ... Read More

VHS : Christopher Strong
This film is Katharine Hepburn's second film and her first in a starring role. In her first film, 1932's "A Bill of Divorcement", Billie Burke had starred with Hepburn fourth billed. Here the situation has reversed itself, and Hepburn supplants Burke in more ways than one. Hepburn plays Lady Cynthia Darrington, a member of the British gentry whose family has lost its money. As a result, she pursues aviation for both her love of it and for money to try and restore the family fortune. She has forsaken love up to this point in her life, and as the result of a human scavenger hunt at a party attended by one of her friends, she winds up at the party because she is a virgin, and Christopher Strong (Colin Clive) winds up there because he is a faithful husband to Billie Burke's character. The two meet, fall in love, and eventually this ... Read More

I love this movie. Joan plays Anni Pavlovitch, aka Anne Vivaldi, a penniless chorusgirl pretending to be a society matron in hopes of snaring a rich man at a posh Swiss resort. Joan acted beautifuly in this picture. I always loved it when Joan played regular girls because her characters were always so natural and sweet with a devilish streak, like in this picture. Didn't Joan look so beautiful, too? One of my favorite pictures with Ms. Crawford from the mid/late 30's.

8.Nana starring: Anna Sten, Phillips Holmes, Lionel Atwill, Richard Bennett, Mae Clarke

VHS : Nana

This 1934 film is beautiful to look at, elegant, commanding the audience to pay attention to its star and its first-class look and sound. . Why this was portrayed for decades as a notorious flop is a mystery, Anna Sten is beautiful and distinctive, and the story, however sweetened from Zola's novel, compelling. Visually stunning, first-class Goldwyn people at work. Directed by Dorothy Arzner, now being re-evaluated and honored.

There is even an excellent Rodgers and Hart song written for it, which Anna Sten sings in the Dietrich style, yet with her own unique quality.
