VHS : Men
Here's an offbeat movie that is clever and funny. A happily married man (so he thinks), played by Heiner Lauterbach, is about to celebrate his 12th wedding anniversary when he discovers his wife (Ulrike Kriener) is having an affair with an artist (Uwe Ochsenknecht). He decides to get revenge by moving in with Uwe and attempting to change him into someone just like himself. It works and his wife comes back to him. The movie looks at gender roles in an upside-down, clever way that is both insightful and very humorous. It's a wonderful little farce. Shot on a shoestring, it was a mild hit when it first came out. Definitely worth a watch.

Just imagine, one day your penis starts talking to you - giving you its points of view, opinions, complaints, suggestions, and teaching you life lessons. Well, I most certainly can not but I thought that the idea was interesting. The movie is a loose adaptation of great Alberto Moravia's novel (notable adaptations of his novels include Vittorio De Sica's "Two Women" (1960), based on "La Ciociara", Jean-Luc Godard's" Contempt: (1963), from "Il Disprezzo", and Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Conformist" (1970), from the book of the same name) and I thought that it was funny. Occasionally...

The movie won a Golden Screen award in 1988 - which is presented to the distributors of domestic and foreign feature films - including documentary and children films - with more than 3,000,000 admissions ... Read More

VHS : Nobody Loves Me
Yes, it is a huge shame that this fun and uplifting film is not available in the US. For those of you who CAN view it, go for it! I t is a gem and when it was here way back in 1996, I went to see in two nights in a row--partly for the joy of the audience singing Edith Piaf's song, but also because it just makes you feel so happy about humans..not exactly a common place sentiment these days...

VHS : Am I Beautiful?
I am a huge fan of Doris Dörrie's "Nobody Loves Me" and have been searching for a copy of it with English subtitles for years now to no avail. I just rented a copy of "Am I Beautiful?" from Netflix and have fallen in love with this film of Dörrie's as well. Her quirky treatment of love and death, the truthful understanding of the many ages of woman, the assortment of languages and types - all combine to make a moving, funny, personal film which does not shy away from joy or despair. And yet the disc Netflix had in their library must have come from China!! It did have a choice of English or Chinese subtitles, but all of the menus and the label on the disc were all in Chinese. Exactly what do U.S./British film distributors have against Dorrie anyway?

The tale of two middle-age German brothers learning to let go in a Japanese Zen monastery, this film may not lead to your own enlightenment, but it is guaranteed to provide a few laughs, as well perhaps as stimulate a moment or two of personal reflection.

The humor comes mostly from the sparks given off in the clash of cultures, in this case not only German/Japanese, but also Christian/Buddhist. Uwe's middle-class world is turned upside down when his wife leaves with the kids. His sympathetic brother Gustav takes him along to his meditation retreat at the Soto Zen monastery at Monzen (a real temple in Ishikawa prefecture). Before getting to the monastery and the more insightful part of the film, the brothers stumble through a number of misadventures in Tokyo.
