VHS : More Than You Know
Dexter Gordon was a fascinating and innovative jazz musician, and this documentary gives us a very full picture of career - covering his times in Los Angeles, New York and Copenhagen.

And the footage of him through the years shows him playing in excellent form. Most of us know him best for his quartet and qunitet recordings, but there is a special bonus of seeing him play with a huge orchestra here also.

It is also great that Gordon is practically the sole interview voice in the documentary, though there are also a few comments from people like Ben Webster, Phil Woods and Woody Shaw. Hearing him tell his own story lends a personal touch.

All in all, a very pleasant music documentary.

VHS : Louis Prima - The Wildest
If you enjoy the music of Louis Prima, buy this DVD - no ifs, ands, or buts. Rare photos, movie clips, and television footage document Prima's career from his early years in New Orleans up through his final performances in the 1970s. Interviews with Prima's brother, Leon, two of his five wives, Keely Smith and Gia Maione, saxophonist Sam Butera, drummer Jimmy Vincent, and others make this highly informative and enjoyable. Of course, it is the Big Man himself who steals the show. I guarantee that only minutes into this tribute to a great performer you'll be tapping your toes to his unique swinging style and understand why he was truly "The Wildest." Enjoy!

VHS : Glenn Miller: America's Musical Hero
The documentary was wonderful. The oral history was as good as it gets. It is interesting to note that some of the individuals who knew Glenn Miller are now dead. They spoke and their words
will live on forever. Glenn had a premonition regarding his own
death...I find that to be very exciting. You'll not be disappointed.

VHS : Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Harold Arlen
OVER THE RAINBOW is a beautifully put together tribute to one of America's greatest yet overlooked composers. Harold Arlen helped create American popluar song by creating melodies that are embedded in our subconscious. Working with the greatest lyricists of the day,the film beautifully depicts his glamorous Hollywood and Broadway life, as well as examines the deep sorrow that seemed to be so much a part of his character. With amazing clips of the greatest singers all time (including Judy, Barbra, Tony, Lena and Frank) singing his amazing songs, OVER THE RAINBOW is a wonderful journey down the yellow brick road to meet it's composer, Harold Arlen.

VHS : Charles Mingus: Triumph of the Underdog
I have this on VHS tape and DVD. I've watched it dozens of times. To me, it's not about Mingus the bass player or composer. It's about how great artists are often conflicted, complex, sometimes self-destructive and contradictory people. And in this sense it is a 100% successful documentary with spot-on interviews. But the archival sound on the DVD is just terrible. Speaking and more mordern music sound is OK. Older music is better on the VHS tape.
