This is a decent film that deserves to be re-issued on DVD. While not a big budget opus like infamous Mel Gibson's THE PATRIOT, this is a much higher quality film overall. While a bit slow in the beginning with family relationships in Lexington, the film picks up when the British at last appear on the screen! There is a nice shot of the British columm deploying impressively into line to face Captain Parker's company. The only problem here is that the British force at this point consisited of six companies of Light Infantry who jogged into town at a fast clip before forming line opposite the militia. This would have been less impressive to show, plus i guess the available re-enactors could not all be shown in Light Infantry garb. So we get the usual mix of line companies, Grenadiers and ... Why is this not on DVD! I would love to buy it for my friends and for myself. Dick Van Dyke is a great star. I wouldn't mind buying it on VHS if that is the only option except it is rather expensive. I'll have to wait for the price to go down.

VHS : Separate Tables (1958)
What a gem of a movie this is. Lancaster is great (as always) as a tortured, 'I love her and hate her, can't live without her' ex-husband of Rita Hayworth, who in my opinion, gives one of the movie's least effective performances. Wendy Hiller is completely heart breaking as someone who is so afraid of loving (and with good cause it turns out) and yet so full of love for Burt Lancaster. Deborah Kerr, IMO, over-acts here, but has her finest scene in the final dining room scene when she finally seperates herself from Mommy-dearest (who is also afraid of losing the one thing she has left). But the movie belongs to David Niven. OMG. The final scene where he comes into the dining room and tries to blend into the woodwork, make himself small and tight, drops his fork, tries to hide behind the menu...have you ever seen ... With those lines, Henry Manicini's song begins one of the finest romatic movies Hollywood ever produced. I have loved "Dear Heart" from my first viewing so many years ago on television, and I was so happy when it was first released on VHS. I actually sent letters asking the movie be saved. Now, it is about to be forgotten again, and that would be such a shame. I hope someone will rescue this most wonderful of movies and release it on DVD. I promise to be an ardent customer.
Why is the movie so special? - wonderful script, superb acting, careful direction, and, of course, Henry Mancini's haunting score.
Geraldine Page, perhaps one of the finest actresses to grace the stage or silver screen, shines as the loveable, sometimes whacky, and always genuinely beautiful Evie Jackson. Her performance as Evie is a thing ... Read More

I liked the movie. I was in it when it was filmed at Beale AFB, CA
in 1963. I was a Security Policeman on the flight line and we, as
well as our aircrews and missle crews were used as background players.
SAC, with a little human dramatization, was pretty well portrayed with
the ORI (Operational Readiness Inspection) which typically hit about 2 AM
as a No Notice inspection by 15th Air Force.
When the end of the movie came and they showed a missle launch crew,
it was filmed at a Titan I site, and the launch crew and their dialogue
was real. They were not actors.
I would like to see this movie made into a DVD. I used to rent until
I got one that ruined my VCR after use by another renter who damaged the
tape and of course didn't tell ... Read More

Rod Steiger is a better Marty. He brings an awareness of his own "plainness" that never leaves his face. The old black and white studio films for TV are grainy and hard to watch, but the emotional content of this and another favorite of mine ("Requiem for a Heavyweight" with Jack Palance) give us an intimacy and immediacy that the larger films with longer story lines don't. Also Nancy Marchand as the plain woman he comes to love is just as subtle and underplayed, her pain over her situation evident without overacting. I highly recommend this to people who like "small" films.

I am sorry to say the quality of the DVD was poor.

We couldn't watch it as it stopped and started, or paused and started.

I am very disappointed.

This was a fun, enjoyable movie. The plot was rather simple, the acting was good, but not outstanding. 4 stars
