VHS : Frankenstein
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast on TNT in 1993. I recently rented it and remembered how good it was all over again. My favorite film version of Frankenstein is the 1931 version with Boris Karloff. Of the modern versions, I like the Kenneth Branaugh (1994) version and this one. This version is more faithful to the Mary Shelley novel than most other versions. Randy Quaid was magnificent as the monster, and in my opinion did a better job than Robert De Niro in the 1994 version. This film shows what a serious and gifted actor Quaid can be. The major difference from the novel is the creation of the creature. Mary Shelley never actually said that electricity brought the creature to life but she did say that the creature was stitched together from corpses. In this film, Frankenstein ... Read More

VHS : Jekyll & Hyde
Michael Caine plays Dr. Jekyll, and he doesn't disappoint. He is a more mature doctor, which is closer in line to Stevenson's original.

Since John Barrymore's silent film, Hollywood has added the female element to the story. (The original story has no female "romance" at all. The only females are servants, passer-bys, a little child, and all the main characters are un-married men.)

Cheryl Ladd plays the sister of Dr. Jekyll's deceased wife. Her father is Dr. Lanyon, and because he blames Henry Jekyll for his daughter's death-although she died of pnuemonia, for which there was no cure at the time, there is an added element of dissention between them.

With an actress as attractive as Cheryl Ladd, there is of course a romance that develops between her and Michael ... Read More

The best thing about this movie is David Essex. He is georgeous!
He just keeps getting better and better. And for any of you Essex fans who haven't seen this movie yet, there is a shower scene! As far as I'm concerned David shines in this. The song "I think I'll always love you" was composed by him but sung by someone else. It is lovely. I enjoyed this film so much I bought it in BETA, and am now purchasing it in VHS!

VHS : Jack the Ripper
Best of the Ripper lot, with the possible exception of "Murder by Decree".This 2-part TV miniseries from 1988 starring Michael Cain is fast-paced, colorful, well-acted (Cain's at his cockney best) and tense. I have a copy I made 20 years ago and like a fellow reviewer above, can't understand why a Region 1 DVD is so long in coming. This one is a classic!

10.Van der Valk starring: Martin Wyldeck, Michael Latimer, Joanna Van Gyseghem
