Great W.W.2 movie. With William Holden a great actor. I sure do miss him. He puts these new actors to shame. Good movie for any war buff to add to his or hers collection.

Great story telling. So much story to follow, so much history to learn and wonder about how the human race can survive so much.

VHS : Hobson's Choice
For those who didn't know, and I was one of them, a Hobson's choice is a free choice, but where only one option is really available. At the end of Hobson's Choice, a fine, vulgar, poignant and very funny film directed by David Lean, this is what Henry Horatio Hobson faces. Elements of the plot are discussed.

Hobson (Charles Laughton) is a prosperous shoe and boot merchant in the small town of Salford, England. The time is the 1880s. Hobson is a widower, a blusterer, a man accustomed to his comforts, his drink and his ease. He is, thanks to Laughton, larger than life, a man we can laugh at but not a man we'd probably want as a neighbor. He has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) is 30. She is, says her father, "a bit ripe" for marriage at her age, and he plans to keep it ... Read More

Better to get the British version and import it while using a non-regional DVD then sit through the affront to the eyes that the American company is trying to sell us. David Lean's Technicolor is always exquisite, and never more so than in the complicated color designs of BLITHE SPIRIT, in which Charles and Ruth Condomine (Rex Harrison and Constance Cummings) sail through a variety of tweedy outfits that are so brilliantly detailed you can "read" every tooth in the houndstooth. (And Cummings has some wonderful period evening gowns that still look exquisite--she has a lovely figure here and always looks great, even when you're struggling to learn to like her.)

And then there's Elvira (Kay Hammond), summoned back from the dead by whom? (I won't say here, because that's the central mystery ... Read More

VHS : Passage to India
David Lean's first film in 14 years was to be his final - and was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning 2, (Supporting Actress Peggy Ashcroft and Music Score Maurice Jarre. An excellent adaptation of the E.M. Forster novel, purists may quibble with some changes Lean made in his screenplay. However, the recreation of 1920s India under British control is breathtakingly beautiful and it's an intriguing story. Along the way, the appalling British attitude towards the locals underlines the plot. The DVD has been remastered in high definition and seems to look better than its original theatrical release. Excellent bonus features include interviews with some of the first-rate cast and a contemporary interview with Lean. There is also a detailed audio-commentary from producer Richard Goodwin. Lean is the master director ... Read More

VHS : Great Expectations
First, a word of warning to the modern viewer: If you are the type of viewer who cannot stand the overacting, dramatically altered 'Hollywood' ending, and absurdly ostentatious soundtrack score inherent to any film released in the 1940s, you may choose to look elsewhere for an adaptation of Dickens.

If, however, you are able to accept the limitations and imperfections of the decade in which this was created, you will see a beautifully filmed masterpiece. Some of the camera work in this work is incredible. The director shows a sensitivity to setting and mood unparalleled in any other adaptation of 'Great Expectations'. Even some of the acting is brilliant, especially Alec Guiness's role as Herbert Pocket.

Diehard fans of Dickens, especially those familiar with the controversy over Dickens's two ... Read More

VHS : The Greatest Story Ever Told
This movie more than any other has always brought tears to my eyes. It is so close to the real Jesus and gives a better idea of the Man that He was in life on earth. His goodness, His kindness, and His holyness is of a Person we can and should try to follow. If we did this, the world would be a much better place today. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would like to see Him taken out of schools or His Ten Commandments tossed, for they are not that hard to follow, and they keep us "civilized" and better able to get along with one another.
