If you're looking for a Book turned into a movie--this is it but in a very obscure fashion. This movie takes the stereotypes that Long writes about in his short novel and basically flips them around here. Here you have the American man, but it is he that is hopelessly inlove with the Asian "woman" (using that term lightly). She is the one that is full of decite and ends up betraying him. At the end, he has to realize that he, not only was abdoned and betrayed, but it was by a man. This movie had great twists and turns and also and was definetly an attention keeper.

Like many other known masters of horror like Tobe Hooper or George Romero, David Cronemberg is one of the most renowned and prominent directors working today in the industry. Only few talented filmakers sprang into public consciousness with such audacity and intelligence, from a series of low budget surprising shockers back in the mid 70's , untill today's acclaimed classic masterpieces of all times in modern horror, with the unmistakable mark of a true author, a gifted brilliant talent that explored with authentic passion, the limits and boundaries of hallucination, grotesque, and surrealistic carnal madness.

The difference between Cronemberg and other repected colleagues worth mention, is that he never got caged in the same level of scanning of the genre, he's a dark pioneer, a visionary ... Read More

I saw this unintentionally as I went to the cinema to see the other film of a double feature. This was the most amazing surprise of my life. Unlike other King films, this isn't really horror - no goblins, unless you count the evil Stillson.

Others have written well about this film. I'd just like to say that if you like psychological thrillers with a twist, you'll love this film.

Conspiring monster bugs. . .ejaculating typewriters. . .inter-zone intrigue. . .
As a statement on addiction--interesting.
As a statement on writing--interesting.
As entertainment--duh?
Well-acted, well-made, but just, at times, so flat-out weird that it makes it, well--not enjoyable.

Cronenburg loves to press your buttons. Any deeply troublesome idea, any frightful notion, any scouring feeling that makes you uncomfortable--he wants to uncover and examine it.
Shivers opens up in an inviting way. There is a depiction of perhaps a perfect suburban development. It displays the latest and greatest luxuries that modern technology has to offer. But this little community has some problems...
Mainly, some disgusting little parasites. A doctor decides to experiment with some venereal diseases and aphrodisiacs. But unfortunately, in the process he accidentally spawned some gross bloodsuckers that cause rampant and lewd sexual behaviour. Chaos ensues as this fatal sex craze speads throughout the area. There is incest, rape, and beastiality to accompany the ferocious bloodletting. This mass ... Read More

[Existenz [IMPORT]Forget "The Matrix". Now, really forget it. It's a different movie. "eXistenZ" lives in a world, or really nested realities, all its own. Cronenberg is a master of mixing up reality with non-reality and physical with non-physical. I think one of the beauties of "eXistenZ" is the ugliness of the Virtual Reality world created by Geller's (Jennifer Jason-Leigh) half-mutant amphibian/half plastic game pod. The icky porting into it with an umbilical cord into the spinal column is so Cronenberg. I liked the way he had the characters (and us) believing they were out of the game when they were still in it... those pesky nested realities. It does harken back to some of Philip K. Dick's visionary short stories, as well as Cronenberg's own "Videodrome" (especially with the "Death to..." sequence). I also liked the ... Read More

Videodrome was a fantastic film by Cronenberg, I remember watching this film for the very first time just a few years ago and I was really impressed by this. I just thought that the film was more relevant and contemporary nowadays then it was back then. This innovative mix of science fiction, sex, violence, surrealism and horror has lost none of its touch over the years. I have enjoyed most of Cronenberg's movies and think he is one of the most underrated directors out there, this film definitely represents his own vision and was quite original I mean nobody would have thought about this concept back in 1983 which is amazing. O.K. so the film was totally bizarre and if you're the type of person who likes watching films that are streamlined and normal then forget it but if your familiar with Cronenberg's work then you'll probably ... just watched it a couple nights ago. aside from a couple decent performances, a few intriguing ideas and sufficient blood during the death scenes, this film was barely watchable.

i'm not a huge Cronenberg fan, but like some of his movies. i rank The Brood towards the bottom of his catalog.
