VHS : The Thorn Birds - The Complete Miniseries
Although most agree that this was a gripping storyline and a classic miniseries, there were some people that criticized Rachel Ward. I would like to point out the following:

1) She was extraordinarily beautiful, hard to look away from when she was on-screen. It was plausible that a priest or any other man would be drawn to her. I can't imagine a better-cast Meggie than Rachel Ward.

2) Ward did a remarkable job of portraying convincing love scenes with a gay actor (Richard Chamberlain). I do not know if the cast was aware of his proclivity. If nothing else, Ward's gaydar may have signaled her to the truth of Chamberlain's orientation. Both actors deserve credit for pulling this off.

3) The reality on the set was that Ward had found her "masculine ... Read More

VHS : I Heard the Owl Call My Name
Having lived in Alaska for 7 years after moving from Europe, I was pleasantly surprised when I found this film recently. The film portrays the needed sensitivity to other cultures and shows how misguided we can be to judge cultures with our own values. the simplicity and realism found in the story's plot makes for a moving experience as it is easy to relate to the priest's perspective. As the film progresses you find your own feelings and prejudices are revealed and altered.

Definately recommended, prepare to be stuck by the elegance of this film.

Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake

Written by Curtis Hanson and directed by Daryl Duke, this 1978 Canadian-made film remains a first-rate thriller after thirty years.

Elliott Gould stars as a laid-back bank teller who correctly suspects that the guy dressed up as Santa Claus (Christopher Plummer) is planning to hold up the bank within the next day or two. Planning to take advantage of this knowledge, he short-changes the thief during the robbery, then hides the bulk of the money in his own safety deposit box.

Plummer is a violent criminal; not to be cheated. He begins to stalk Gould, setting in motion a tense cat-and-mouse game in which Elliott's life is at stake.

Susannah York and John Candy co-star in this suspenser that is filled with ... Read More

I loved this movie and am waiting for its release in DVD format ... hopefully someday. I don't understand these morons here who are giving away some of the most poignant scenes - they must be nuts. Sorry, but to spoil such scenes and reveal some of this is so selfish. The movie really packs a wallop; it's very real, painful, tragic and loving.

VHS : Payday (1972)
"Maury Dann, the second-rate country singer and first-rate heel played by Rip Torn." Ken Tucker

Payday is a film that left me feeling forlorn, a feeling of emptiness and what's next. Rip Torn played his character, Maury Dann, true to form. A country singer on his way down from never near the top. He cheats, wheedles, lies and moves on so easily without remorse, using whomever he needs to, I wonder what is the purpose of his life. It seems he has little regard for those who travel with him or might love him. His purpose is to make money to pay for the booze, women and song that make up his life. The surrounding players had little or no effect on me, but, of course, they made the film a whole. I can see in my mind's eye that this course of life goes on daily with hundreds of people moving through the ... Read More

After reading the book I was extremely disappointed by this poor attempt. I had the 'bad joss' of actually buying the dvd after reading the book. If you hadn't read the book the film would be truly incomprehensible, and if you read the book you would feel a tremendous void. As many other reviewers have said, Taipan needs to be reincarnated as a mini-series of some sort to afford it proper treatment.
