VHS : Love Letter (1998)
Growing up with Somewhere in Time (Collector's Edition), I was intrigued by Hallmark Hall of Fame's Love Letter, based on a haunting 1959 short story by Jack Finney. Scott Corrigan is a Civil War buff who designs Civil War simulation games (check out the 1998 computer graphics!). One day as he and his fiancee Debra are shopping for a vintage wedding gown, he discovers an antique desk and it's love at first sight, even though he can't really afford it. Scott's also a restorer in his spare time, so when he tries to polish the desk, he discovers the (common Civil War) feature of a hidden compartment that contains a small bottle of ink, a fountain pen, and some blank stationary addressed "Elizabeth Whitcomb." He also finds a sensual, romantic letter to the imaginary man of Elizabeth's dreams, and ... Read More

VHS : Night of Dark Shadows
Those that are not fans of Dark Shadows will never see the "Dan Curtis" creativity in this movie. The late Dan Curtis was like a Gene Roddenberry when it came to daytime horror drama. Underappreciated and never quite understood, he made us love to be scared. Night of Dark Shadows, gives David Selby and Kate Jackson (a very young Kate Jackson) a chance to standout on their own from the other cast members in their own movie. David Selby is quite versital and shows that he can portray more than one character and personality within a movie. Kate's role is unfortunately limited to just being suspicious and scared all the time. The plot is definately done in Curtis' style, moving quickly through the layers of suspense.

Panned as one of the worst movies -- I don't think so -- you gotta be a fan ... Read More

VHS : House of Dark Shadows
I read recently on a Dark Shadows convention website that the 2 Dark Shadows films will soon be released on a double DVD, both restored!

Dark Shadows is one of the best TV shows ever(IMOHO). Dan Curtis made a HUUUUGE mistake in the 'House of Dark Shadows' movie by killing off nearly the entire Collins clan. i think that maybe he was tired of it all, and had no idea of the cult-like following that would develop around this series.

Too bad.

Having studied the abduction phenomenon in some depth, and being acquainted with all the published work of Budd Hopkins, John Mack and David Jacobs over 20 years with thousands of abductees, I had low expectations of a dramatized movie doing justice to this enormous and detailed subject.

But wow, what a surprise. The movie really is good. It could be watched by a viewer very familiar with the subject, or one to whom the subject matter might be new and unknown, and both would find it absorbing and compulsive viewing. The screenplay is very strong, the plot line thoughtful in its development and the direction and editing really first class. The actors are all excellent, and the slow conversion of the psychiatrist character to acceptance of the phenomenon as real in the face of the mounting evidence is ... Read More

VHS : War and Remembrance, Vol. 2 (Boxed Set)
This is quite a bit longer than Winds of War and it may not need to be. I skip over parts that deal with the trials and tribulations of people who, in Winds of War wandered around Europe not heeding good advice to get out while they could. Here, again, they are places where they should not be. I originally taped Winds of War and then made an edited copy I called "The Pug Henry Story". I have not done that with the DVD or with War and Remembrance, though I sense such an edit would be very desirable. In the meantime, get ready to fast forward or skip chapters to bring this down to a reasonable length.

VHS : Trilogy of Terror (1975)
Dan Curtis, brain child behind such 70's telehorror hits as "Night Stalker," "The Norliss Tapes," and "Dark Shadows," scores another success with "Trilogy of Terror." This anthology showcased Karen Black's versatility as a superb actress. She portrays four different women in three tales of terror. These women range from plain and conservative to wild and sensuous. The three tales are all based on short stories written by Richard Matheson, the best-selling author of I Am Legend, which spawned three theatrical versions; the last one starred Will Smith.

Supernatural deception is the theme in "Julie." A handsome, young college student decides to blackmail his English professor, Julie, into dating him. Naturally, there are deadly consequences. This tale has a nice downbeat ending that is rather ... Read More

VHS : Kansas City Massacre
The Kansas City Massacre was the shootout and murder of four law enforcement officers and a criminal fugitive at the Union Station railroad depot in Kansas City, Missouri on the morning of June 17, 1933. According the official FBI report, the Kansas City Massacre occurred as the result of the attempt by Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd, Vernon Miller, and Adam Richetti to free their friend, Frank Nash, a federal prisoner. At the time, Nash was in the custody of several law enforcement officers who were returning him to the U.S. Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kansas, from which he had escaped three years earlier. However all of the men alleged to be involved denied involvement. Floyd, in particular, went so far as to write a newspaper denying involvement in the massacre.
