VHS : Z
I was 18 when I saw this movie for the first time, and it gave me quite a shock - for the first time, I realized a movie could be more than just entertainment, then it could inform, infuriate and chill you at the same time.
This movie depicts the events surrounding the death of the charismatic leader of a leftist Greek political faction. As the judge in charge investigates, he realizes that it isn't an accident, but murder, sanctioned by important people. These events are based on the real-life assassination of Gregorios Lambrakis in 1963.
The directing is taut, the actors excellent, and the tension mounts steadily. This is a movie you must see - and ponder seriously. How strong is democracy ? Can a faction in power manipulate events and push aside (or even kill) anyone who opposes ... Read More

VHS : Missing
Costa-Gavras' Missing was part of an exciting trend in early 1980s cinema that included films like The Year of Living Dangerously, Under Fire, The Killing Fields, and Salvador (Special Edition) - powerful, politically-charged exposes of injustices happening all over the world.

The first disc includes a theatrical trailer.

The second disc starts off with two video interviews with Costa-Gavras - one done just after Missing's U.S. premiere and one done for the 2006 French DVD. In the first interview, he addresses the controversy surrounding the film - the U.S. administration did not like the parallels to the situation in El Salvador at the time. The second interview features the director talking about the origins of the project.

Charles' wife, Joyce Horman (played ... Read More

VHS : State of Siege
The film "State of Siege" by Costa Gavras is as relevant today as the day it first came out. This film is a retelling of foreign Governments violent take over South American countries in the late 60s and early 70s. Much of these facts ca also be found in the book The Condor Years: How Pinochet and His Allies Brought Terrorism to Three Continents by John Dinges. A must see thriller that reveals the struggle in Latin America by a group of individuals who named themselves after Tupac Amaru the Great Inca Guerilla warrior who fought against the Spanish to free Peru. The Tupamaros history is well represented in this film but you won't find a DVD or reasonable priced copy of it in the US for various political reasons. I suggest Brazil or Europe.

It's not usual for directors to be politically incorrect. A daring movie that hits the truth, goes against the stream, and explore the tragedy.
I recommend for people seeking understanding of the midle east. Hope you enjoy it.

5.Conseil De Famille (Family Business) starring: Johnny Hallyday, Fanny Ardant, Guy Marchand, Laurent Romor, Rémi Martin

VHS : Conseil De Famille (Family Business)
Costa Gavras shows in this film that he has also a great sense of humor. This film is about shabby gangsters who believe in their talent. They see themselves as professional gangsters only because this is their life. They love their "work", at which they are really bad! The actors are great! It's a fun, entertaining movie with good action. This film, with comic effects, shows a moment in the life of a close family where there is above all: love, affection and frienship.

I recommend this film for adults and for adolescents too.

While the specific story is about Nazis, Jessica Lange's portrayal of a daughter struggling to maintain her high opinion of her father in the face of mounting dark evidence does justice to such a terrible dilemma. This is a truly remarkable, if disturbing, film.

VHS : Betrayed (1988)
This is not a 5 star film. And I have to agree with Acute Observer in finding this not realistic or believable in many aspects. As flawed as our government is I highly doubt that the FBI would allow a club that hunts young black men to continue on while they look for more evidence. And I found it impossible to believe that Debra Winger's character could continue to love Berenger after discovering that he was a racist murderer. This film is a guilty pleasure- albeit a wierd one. It plays more like a tv movie than a brilliant feature film. It is extremely dated and is written for a junior high or high school level of intellect.

VHS : Mad City
'Mad City' is an exceptional film with some minor flaws. The subject matter is intriguing and provocative. John Travolta deserves much of the credit for playing his character both sympathetically and unpredictability. Hoffman is great as usual in this tale of desperation, media manipulation and greed! It's easy to get engrossed in this drama although it's not completely plausible when it comes to police tactics allowing the media and civilians to bum rush scene in question etc., but it's a fascinating film and should not be passed up! The DVD transfer is very good.
