VHS : Plymouth Adventure (1952)
I enjoyed "Plymouth Adventure" very much although it is a flawed film. Something is missing. We learn very little about the persecution of the Pilgrims and their beliefs except that they pray "standing upwards" and are very clean. They even wash with the ship's limited drinking water which causes consternation among crew members. It was especially difficult for me to believe that the wife (Gene Tierney) of Pilgrim leader, William Bradford (Leo Genn) would prefer the ship's bloated, craggy, bitter, and alcoholic captain (Spencer Tracy) over her good-looking and articulate husband. The urbane and darkly handsome Leo Genn became well-known as a fine British film and stage actor with the "black velvet voice" and had already received critical acclaim for his excellent acting (and wit) in "Quo Vadis" ... Hollywood has such a bad reputation among historians, it's easy to dismiss the soap-opera-ish aspect of this film out of hand. It does state at the beginning that it takes certain liberties with chronology.

But it gets the essentials right. Robert and Clara Schumann had a life so full of dramatic incidents, it does seem like the most unlikely Hollywood screenplay. They *did* begin their married life in retreat from her overbearing father. They did have eight children. Later, the young Johannes Brahms, an unknown pianist and composer *did* show up on their doorstep, knocked their socks off with his genius, *was* invited to stay-- and *did* fall in love with Clara.
Robert *did* suffer from mental illness, and *did* die in an institution.

But more than that, ... Read More

'Guffy' McGovern's the roughest guy in baseball and he manages the worst team in baseball, the Pittsburgh Pirates (many actual scenes from the old Forbes Field). When the local paper assigns the Home Economics reporter (Janet Leigh) to cover the Pirates to try and find a different angle since they're losing all the time and nobody is following the team, she confronts McGovern about his attitude and he replies, 'Dogs have fleas, managers have sportswriters'. After being thrown out of a game for the umpteenth time, 'Guffy' can't find his pin and goes to look for it on the field after the game. It is there sitting on 2nd base under the stars he encounters an angel and his life is changed. No more bad guy. Amazingly the team's fortunes start to change, also. It becomes even more mysterious when Janet Leigh writes ... Read More

I saw this movie a few months ago and parts of it stay with me. I thought it was a nice attempt to summerize the moods, trials, and perspectives of the folks at home during WWII. In attempting such a bold purpose, it takes a few liberties. Unfortunately, those liberties have tended to stay with me longer than the rest of the movie. One of the artistic licenses was a drive through the park on a Sunday afternoon. As our characters drive along, they pass one ethnic group after another; each doing their own cultural "thing" often in their unique cultural dress. The message is meant to be about America welcoming all groups into embrace but it's hard not to notice, from 60 years down the road, how nobody seems to be assimulating and none are interacting with each other.

The other artistic liberty ... Read More

I think this is another one of Gables funniest performances.Ive seen it a few times and enjoyed it everytime. It definetly is a must see for any Gable fan or anyone who hasnt seen much of Gable. True that the movie may not be very artistic but FAST TALKING, LIGHT HEARTED,CONFIDENT,FRIENDLY GABLE always does it for me, especially when we live in a time where movies have gotten very ''artistic" but lack everything else. I'm always charmed by Mr. Gables quality of an "easy going" fellow always taking life lightly, a great example and inspiration to me. Norma Shearer was also enjoyable to me and she does go over the top on the second half, however it is still enjoyable to watch her.Anyway I hope they release this one and the rest of Gables movies on DVD because I'm ready to purchase...

This was a very good classic movie about racism. I am too young to recognize any of the actors and I wonder if any of the Black actors really experienced racism while filming this movie. Example, did they have to go through the back doors of restaurants and hotels. Also, maybe did they have to drink out of the "white only" water fountains while filming. This movie had to be surreal to the Black actors in this movie because I am quite sure they experienced racism in their everyday real lives.

VHS : Woman of Affairs (Silent)

Garbo has the ability to make any picture she was in a transcendent marvel, but this one comes across as just a heavy-handed weeper. She and John Gilbert love each other, but his father talks him out of marrying her - for "honor's sake" (what honor?), and he marries another instead. Garbo, too, marries someone else, John Mack Brown, a sleazebag who ends up killing himself when he's about to be arrested for embezzlement. Of course Garbo and Gilbert are still madly in love with each other, but when Garbo sees that Gilbert is still in love with his "good" wife Constance, she realizes it's all pretty hopeless between them, and she kills herself. It's all kind of silly and unbelievable and overly melodramatic, even for this era, and the story feels draggy before long. The off-screen love affair between Garbo and Gilbert probably ... VHS : They Met in Bombay
They Met in Bombay is a film about two thieves, one of which is amateurish but successful (Rosalind Russell) and one who takes his time and replaces jewels with fakes to buy himself time (Clark Gable). The two stumble upon each other when they both plan to steal the same piece and join up when things do not go as well as they had planned. They escape on a Chinese boat heading toward Hong Kong with a suspicious captain whose money hungry behavior is detrimental for their cause (Peter Lorre). The thieves head toward China themselves but find themselves in the midst of an impending war with Japan. For authority purposes, Gable disguises himself as an officer in the military but gets roped into a major scuffle with the Japanese army.

There are plenty of great events throughout this movie which never leaves one bored. The cast is ... Read More
