VHS : The Ma & Pa Kettle Collection: The Egg and I
This warm and funny account of a newly married couple trying to make a go of it on a backwoods chicken farm, based on Betty MacDonald's popular best seller, was a big hit with audiences during the 1940's and has lost none of its appeal today. This is a great film the entire family can watch together. Chester Erskine produced, directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Fred F. Finklehoffe in this hilarious and heartwarming film all will enjoy.

Claudettle Colbert is wonderful as the shocked but game Betty when on her honeymoon her husband Bob (Fred MacMurray) informs her he has quit his brokerage house job and bought a chicken farm in the country. She figures things could be worse, and they are, as their farm is a ramshackle old place that fights back! After all, there's not another ... Read More

VHS : Call it Murder
Looks as if it was written and directed by a couple of kids still at school. I can remember being in amateur theatricals like this when I was about 16 or 17. The director has a few visual ideas; eg, the wooden bars of a staircase banister turn into the iron bars of the condemned cell. Not that there's a lot of point to that one. The upshot of the story is that it's right to pursue the letter of the law, no matter how unpopular it makes you, or how strong your psychological empathy with the accused --- even if she's your own daughter. Quaint, in a way. Yes, Bogart is in it, just about. Was this his first turn as a baddie, after playing matinee idols?

VHS : Androcles & The Lion
This movie is highly entertaining and very funny. I had laughed at some scenes in this movie. Even kids will enjoy this movie.
"Androcles and the Lion" is about a meek tailor befriending a lion by removing a thorn out of his paw (his mean wife ran away though). Androcles named the lion "Tommy". The tailor, Androcles, gets captured by the Roman army because he's a Christian, and makes friends with a beautiful woman and a burly man named Fevvorus (sp?), among other Christians with them. The beautiful woman, named Lavina, falls in love with a Roman Captain (played by Victor Mature), but she still keeps her faith in God. Later when all the Christians arrived at the Colluseum where the fighting to kill the Christian men, and the lions are for the ladies to die, Fevvorus slays all the fighters ... Read More

VHS : Leading Men: Call It Murder/Time of Your Life
These movies are issued by a myriad of companies. I only have this set so I can't comment on the comparative quality. I can state that I am satisfied with the quality of this Roan set. That is, the images are mostly crisp and there wasn't much hiss. The price is a plus also.

I Liked "Time of Your Life" best. It has a good quirky cast and plot. The acting is also first rate. It has a certain stage play feel to it.

"Blood On The Sun" is a more than adequate suspense yarn.

"Something to Sing About" is a fun movie. Its kind of a comedy-musical-drama. Nothing too serious.

VHS : Humphrey Bogart: Beat the Devil & Call It Murder
Beat the Devil is far from Bogart's best, but it is a witty, entertianing send-up of some of his best films like the Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, and Key Largo. The plot invovles some rather vague shennanigans having to do with a uranium mine, but the plot is almost beside the point in a film like this. The real fun has to do with Bograt, Peter Lorre, and the rest of the cast playing it straight in one ludicrous scene after another. The film is atmospheric, well-paced, and full of the unexpected. It has deservedly become a cult classic, and the reputation of this film has increased as the critics realized that director John Huston was pulling everyones leg with this film.

Call it Murder is an intelligent, thought provoking film, that does seem a bit stagey, slow-moving, even creaky ... Read More
