A cameo on Frederick Chopin in his short lifespan. Flicks of this quality, once made, will never be made again

Glorious music and glorious robes for Liz Taylor. Butmy God what a trashy story - yes, of course the woman has to be selfless, of course she has no talent whatsoever. This is how girls were taught to be dummies....

Somewhere along the line I ran across a review from a young man in his 20's who had always dismissed Doris Day as a dated and somewhat silly relic of another day in Hollywood history. Until he saw this movie and what a relevation that was! Doris singing "Ten Cents a Dance" made him sit up, take notice and understand why she was a such a star. "What a babe" was, I believe, his reaction.

At first when I bought this movie, I was really excited since I remember watching this when I was little. I thought to buy this so that my family could enjoy it with me. The children hemmmmmed and hawwwwwed they wanted a different movie, this looked boring. I ignored them, put the movie on, and left to wash dishes. All of a sudden silence, the children were entranced by this movie and did not budge until it was over and then wanted to watch it again!

I bought this VHS after reading some of the customer reviews on Amazon and I will have to be more discerning in the future. Some of the reviews that were 5 stars raved about the production and the performances and I gotta wonder what they were watching or if they were sober during their movie experience. This was a "B" movie at best and even for the early 1930's this was a poor effort. I have always been a fan of Boris Karloff, Myrna Loy and even Lewis Stone, but I'm afraid they were wasted in this effort. Even comparing it with Bela Lugosi's Dracula from the early 1930's and Frankenstein of the same time period, it can't hold a candle. Lousy script, poorly staged and everything that went with that type of production. Too bad.

I had fond memories of the book and of the movie itself I had seen many years ago on TV. In viewing it again, I wonder what I was thinking then for now it is more than a bit boring and its atmosphere of 1930s feel-good socialism is almost unbearable now that we have lived through the prosperity of the 1980s.

On top of that, the VHS sound is exceptionally poor.

Moral: If a film is NOT available on DVD, it is probably that unpopular for a good reason.

10.Song Without End starring: Dirk Bogarde, Capucine, Geneviève Page, Patricia Morison, Ivan Desny

VHS : Song Without End
I was really impressed with all the reports I have read on Song Without End. I notice it is not being offered on DVD at present. But I did buy it on Video originally and when I saw I could get it on DVD; a while back I thought it might have improved in quality of sound.
Alas; the DVD has the same faults as the Video so obviously no technical re recording was attempted.
I am not very versed in the history of Lizst and his affairs and the ones with whom he had his affairs.
I mainly was disappointed at some of the technical flaws in the Movie BOTH on Video and then again on DVD.
While I realize the Movie was originally probably made on 35 mm for Cinema showing..I want other viewers to look at it again and see the number of places where the sound is quite poor.
1. In One or two of the concerts Lizst's playing ... Read More
