VHS : Ma & Pa Kettle Go to Town
Although THE EGG AND I, which came before, introduced Ma and Pa Kettle (Marjorie Main/Percy Kilbride) to film audiences, this is the second of their series as principals. While residing in the modern home that the pair had won in their first solo adventure, Pa wins a trip for both to New York City, with their apparent only problem the locating of a babysitter for the 15 Kettle children, solved when Shotgun Mike Munger (Charles McGraw), a bank robber in search of a hideout is willing to take on this formidable assignment. The Kettles agree to deliver an empty bag belonging to Munger to his "brother" Louie (Gregg Martell) in Gotham, not realizing it contains $100,000 in stolen cash and the fun begins with gangsters tailing Pa and the police keeping a watch on the thugs, all while Shotgun Mike ... The film opens in early 20th century London. A cloaked figure attacks and kills a person walking on the sidewalk. Another unsolved murder. Women are demonstrating for the vote - they put on a song and dance for equal rights! There is a protest from onlookers and comic violence. Bruce Adams is the reporter who covers this happening. Tubby and Slim are employed as Bobbies to study police methods. Dr. Jekyll is studying the human mind so as to control mankind for its betterment. Does he have a secret in his basement? Is there a serum that brings out the bestial nature of mankind? [Was this story a parable for alcohol prohibition?]

Tubby and Slim see someone climbing up the side of a theater; they think it is a burglar. Tubby searches for the burglar and sees the monster. There is a comic chase, ... Read More

The Indians try to make a fire in the Kettles fireplace the old fashion way, the smoke signal way. Judges are a comin' to award a child with a scholarship. However, who ever has the nicest looking farm and raises their kids in a good enviroment has a chance of winning. So the Kettles move back to the old farm (where they lived in their first film appearance THE EGG AND I [1947]) to fix it up. Funniest bit: Ma tries on a corset. Another funny bit: The town Indians had to read a book on "Indian Costumes" on how to dress (or be undressed) like their forefathers and learn to put on war mark make-up. Mary Wickes has a role as "Miss Wetter". The Kettles also have Christmas on the farm. The next film in the series is MA AND PA KETTLE AT WAIKIKI (1955).

Orville is pretending to fly a model airplane to entertain some orphans. Something goes wrong and Orville hides in a truck. But there is a mistake in identification. The space ship has been completed, it remains to be tested. Supplies are loaded by Lester and Orville. The boys accidentally start the rocket and take-off. The scenes of the rocket flight are amusing. It flies through the Lincoln Tunnel but does not pay a toll! The rocket lands near New Orleans. When they go exploring two escaped convicts find the rocket ship. The space suits are mistaken for Mardi Gras outfits. [The speech tells something about popular culture.] The two convicts don space suits to rob a bank. Who will be blamed? The militia and citizens are searching the city.

The escaped convicts are on the rocket ship, and it flies off ... Read More

VHS : The Further Adventures of "Ma & Pa Kettle"
This is he first starring role for Ma & Pa Kettle, but not the first film they appeared in. The very first film Majorie Main and Percy Kilbride as "Ma & Pa Kettle", along with Richard Long was in the film "The Egg And I" (1947). They were only minor characters in the film, but made such an impact and was considered so down-home funny that it was decided they should be given a movie of their own. Thus "Ma & Pa Kettle" (1949) was made. In fact, they made eight more films to follow. The films are quite wholesome and Ma & Pa Kettle living on the farm, I'm sure you will enjoy the country-life humor. Ma & Pa Kettle didn't always stay on the farm. They did go to the fair and traveled to the city and even Hawaii. In this film, they finally get to move into a new model home. Wait until you see all the fancy ... Read More

While in Egypt, Peter and Freddie (Abbott and Costello) get involved with a walking mummy, his cult followers, and a cursed medallion.

That's a pretty short summary, but honestly, that's all there is to this disappointing comedy. Abbott and Costello were past their prime in 1955 and the film shows it. The jokes aren't much unless you think endless punchlines with "mummy" instead of "mommy" and snake charmers with rubber snakes are funny. Abbott yells too much at Costello and they both are barely going through the motions; in fact, they call each other "Bud" and "Lou" throughout. The ridiculous casting of Richard Deacon ("Mel Cooley" in The Dick Van Dyke Show) and Michael Ansara (TV's "Cochise") as Egyptian mummy-worshippers makes the story even more far-fetched. It's about thirty minutes too long and plays like ... Read More

VHS : Ma & Pa Kettle on Vacation
Fifth in the Ma and Pa Kettle series, following their introduction to audiences in THE EGG AND I, this entry reunites the Kettles (Percy Kilbride and Marjorie Main) with their new snobbish in-laws, the Parkers (Ray Collins and Barbara Brown) from MA AND PA KETTLE BACK ON THE FARM, for an adventure set in Paris. The quality of the supporting cast is all that might be asked from Universal Studios, but the screenplay falls well below the comedic norm set by better examples from the Kettle canon. The Parkers have discarded their airs and have asked Ma and Pa to be their traveling companions to France after friends cancelled. During the flight to Paris, a mysterious seat mate of Pa Kettle gives him an envelope to keep for him, asking for Pa's promise to return it at the Louis Quatorze Hotel, where all primary parties in the plot will be ... When I met Mickey Rooney, even he said, "Terrible picture. Terrible picture." I can appreciate that this was at a low point in his professional career and yet his performance is wonderful, the plot breezy and the sets and lighting are moodily gothic. Add Richard Deacon in the supporting cast and you have a Francis entry that rivals even "Francis Joins the WACS". I think many had a hard time getting past Francis having a new sidekick- no Donald O'Connor. I wish this were on DVD!

The film begins with a comic song for cafe, society. The Great Wilbert pops up on stage. He is a magician who escapes from his chains. Wilbert may be the heir to a buried treasure back in Kentucky. So they return to the land of the Winfields and the McCoys. [Was this the inspiration for 'The Beverly Hillbillies'?] Dorothy sings another comic song. There is a funny skit about target shooting. Conflict over the results restart a feud. [This tells about popular culture of that time.] How many can share one bed? Wilbert learns about their marriage customs. Can love be created by a potion? "Voodoo." "Who do?" There is a joke about drinking that potion. Can a marriage end a feud between families?

The staged conflict goes on and leads to comedy at the old mine shaft. There is a quick and forced end to this drama. Did a need for ... Read More
