One of the most well acted, well directed and greatest stories ever told. It transends generations. I've watched this movie every Easter since I can remember, and now my children carry on the tradition. This is one to add to the collection.

VHS : The Ten Commandments
Latter-day reviewers have criticized the movie for its campy and overwrought style, but it does present one of the events of the Bible and history in a spectacular way.

This film is NOT a DeMille great - It becomes quite tedious in fact, after the first 40 min's. - due in no small part to Jean Arthur's atrocious miscasting and annoyingly whiney voice (what on earth was her appeal?). James Ellison (of the very great & crazy THE GANG'S ALL HERE) is totally absurd as Buffalo Bill. And poor Cooper seems ill at ease with the silly script.
One can usually count on DeMille to "deliver the goods", here he delivers the not so goods. And there is'nt even a "bath scene"!

Well, it must be a good movie, since I never forgot what I have seen when I was 11. This movie was one of the first we got to watch in Bavaria, after the war. I am a little older now, but would like to see it again, mayby in the original, why not? Johannes.

VHS : Cleopatra
After Julius Caesar became Emperor of Rome he looked towards the riches of Egypt. Cleopatra had been abducted from Alexandria to leave Ptolemy (her brother) in charge. But Cleopatra had a trick to return to meet Caesar. She also knew how to tempt him with a promise of riches. Caesar knows that gold adds to political power. Cleopatra has the right stuff to handle the plot of Plotinus. Back in Rome Brutus and Cassius worry about Caesar becoming king. The Roman aristocrats lead lives of idle luxury. There is a parade where Cleopatra enters Rome. An old man warns Caesar of the Ides of March, so does his wife Calpurnia. Caesar ignores this advice. [He obviously lacks a good intelligence service.]

The conspirators await for their rendezvous with destiny. Caesar is not the last ruler to get an early retirement. ... Read More

Yep, it's black and white, but the story is good clean English Medevil costume drama, not hot on battle scenes, but more on the politics of war and the way love has a cunning way of creeping up on you, smacking you in the helmet and breaking your heart! Kings made out of boys, Friends to the end and England beautiful England. Stick with it and enjoy.

VHS : Sign of the Cross
Brutal, dramatic and poignant film that recreates the events after the painful destruction of Rome by Nero's caprice: Marcus is the loyal officer who falls in love with a very young and beaty Christian; but in the meantime Poppea is in love with him, and due that reason she will send to death the woman he loves.

Claudette Colbert as Nero' wife is alluring and seductive: Frederic March as Marcus is believe believable too, but Charles Laughton as Nero simply is I top form.

Sometimes uneven and sometimes taut; but despite of the facts, the script maintains its force all the way through.

A film worth to see it.

VHS : Ten Commandments (1923) (Silent) (B&W)
Cecil B. DeMille's 1923 silent film of "The Ten Commandments" is a decent work from one of Hollywood's most influential and controversial directors. Unlike DeMille's more powerful 1956 remake with Charlton Heston, the story of Moses and the Hebrews being delivered out of Egypt takes up only about a fourth of the film. But that part is truly spectacular, featuring beautiful cinematography, enormous sets, and visual effects that were cutting-edge for the silent film era.
However, most of this film is set in the 1920s, and concerns how a family is torn apart, as one son sets himself on living by the commandments set down by God, and the other decides to reject the words of his mother, and live his life free of those commandments. Sadly, this part of the film is mostly uninteresting, as the story gets too involved in "preaching" to the audience. ... Read More

VHS : Volga Boatman
Famous for his lavish spectacles, director Cecil B DeMille does not disappoint us with "The Volga Boatman", even though it was filmed at the Sacramento River instead of the Volga in Russia. This 2-hour epic has most of the usual DeMille hallmarks which have become synonymous with the word "Hollywood": visually stunning with just the right balance of drama, passion, romance, suspense and excitement. "The Volga Boatman" is essentially a love story about two people from opposite ends of society, shown starkly in the setting of the Russian Revolution which saw the poor peasant revolt against the rich aristocrats. The Volga boatman, a poor laborer, becomes a leader of the peasant revolt in the Red Army, while his love, Princess Vera from the royal and rich class, is engaged to an officer of the White Army. Although the spotlight is always on the love story and ... Read More
