Even if you do not know a lot about the Spanish Civil War, you will enjoy this incredible movie about that time period in history. There is comedy, tragedy, pathos, suspense and wisdom in this story of a piece of the war as seen through the eyes of two traveling entertainers who happen to land up in the wrong place at the wrong time. The film crescendos to an ending of hope, believe it or not. It does not matter if you understand Spanish, the subtitles are excellent and the performances are superb. I have even used this film for an AP Spanish class of high school seniors and it left a lasting impression on them!

VHS : Carlos Saura Dance Trilogy Part 1 - Carmen
This is one of my all-time favorite films. The color and dancing are spectacular but I think he most interesting and intelligent aspect of he film is the confusion of reality with unreality; life with an opera. The film, which starts on a concrete level becomes more and more surreal as Gades slips into a form of madness--a madness, perhaps, fated by the Gods.

He is obsessed with finding the perfect Carmen and...to their mutual destruction...he finds her. Reality and the opera become increasingly intertwined until Gades distorted reality becomes more powerful than life itself. In parallel with Bizet's Carmen, Gades falls inexplicably and helplessly in love with he faithless Carmen. I won't write more. You really need to see it yourself.

There's only one scene I disapprove ... Read More

I'd heard of this film when it was in the cinemas but I never saw it and to be honest I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It is superb; the film opens with the dancers and musicians arriving for a rehearsal and getting into make-up and costumes. The director then runs a warm-up in which they practice a new dance sequences then they run the whole show as if it were a dress rehearsal; no audience, no lights, just the performers.

The performances are wonderful, the choreography is inventive and the music is beautiful. You don't need to have seen Lorca's play to follow the dance, although a quick glance at the plot is helpful.

Highly recommended.

Synopsis: An old man awakens in bed confused and bewildered. After wandering through a house he doesn't recognize he ends up out on the street impeding traffic and pedestrians until his daughter Rosarito (Dapne Fernadez) comes to his rescue and takes him home. The old man is the legendary painter Goya now in the twilight of his life. Through the eyes of age and experience his life unfolds in a series of flashbacks revealing his passion for painting, his one true love Cayetana (Maribel Verdu) and his homeland Spain.

Critique: Released in '99 `Goya in Bordeaux' is an artsy film heavy on visual presentation but somewhat lacking in character development. It has the feel of a stage production except for the few sequences filmed outside. Most of the film ... Read More

VHS : The Hunt (La Caza)
Three intimate friends who never joined after his childhood adventures by that random destiny agressions rejoin in a bar and decide to make a hunt for the week end .

In this encounter which promised a happy meeting the inner demons will appear from the bottom of theirs souls . The affective memory in what hate concerns is very hard to forget and so these friends will become in hunters and hunted in a chilling chase along the film .

Extraordinary metaphor about the three well definited social stereotypes of Franco's Spain .

To my mind this is the best film of Carlos Saura in all his artistic career .

A violent , desperate , bitter , crude and merciless portrait of a heart-rending society .

A superior film and one of my favorite cult movies ever !

After years of searching at long last, found. This is indeed a most inspiring look into the heart of the magic of the flamenco tradition. Saura is a genius with his staging of this most penetrating deeply Spanish music and dance. The passion held me tight in its grip. The sincerity with which this is portrayed is breath taking. Anyone interested in real music and dance and the power that it can exhude must have a copy of this DVD.

If I had to make a brief account of the top five films of Carlos Saura, this film must be included in this list without any shadow of doubt.

Since an architect suffers an awful accident who lets him in a wheel chair and incapable to pronounce just a simple word , he will be the silent witness of the horror and nastiness of his family members who are really -with visible anxiety- he dies to enrich themselves.

It is very important for you , my dear reader to realize the underground clues given by Saura in this age of the Franquist Regime where the metaphors should be intelligently suggested to avoid the implaccable censure in those times.

Watch as soon as you can this superb and powerful movie!

I had a rather elaborate review in mind before looking over those already filed. Obviously the only thing I can add to all of that is that I too received one of those DVDs with the Director's Commentary locked on, overriding the normal sound track. The special features menu provides buttons for turning commentaries on & off, but the links don't work on my copy. It would seem that when you order this DVD, you may or may not get one with commentaries locked on. Good luck.
