I never cease to be touched by this film; it's one of the few movies I can call "powerful" without being overdramatic. The story centers on Jean Valjean, a convict -- how his life was transformed by the action of a selfless clergyman, and how his own life transforms those around him. It is very much a story about hope, the rarity and value of selflessness and true love and how it transforms the soul more readily than punishment, and the salvation of the human condition. I saw this (the three hour long version), some fifteen years ago. THE BEST INTENTIONS takes an intimate look at the Ingmar Bergman's parents' early years as a young married couple, against the wishes of his mother's (Pernilla August) parents. Her husband is a rather humorless and morose young man (Samuel Froler), and it was hard for me to see why they ended up together, at first. In fact, it was more than hard! Over time, it is revealed why the two came together in this union. Also, keep in mind that if it wasn't for their partnership, the great Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, never would have existed to begin with! So, this pairing was invaluable. At least that's what it meant to me. Replace "South America" in all reviews by the word "Chile", because that is where the story belongs in its cut and dry facts. A wealthy family, a Shakespearean love between a peasant's son and a land owner's daughter; betrayal, rage, passion, violence and murder, ghosts (spirits), rebelion and freedom: all these are just some of the ingredients portraid in the movie with a great line up, awsome landscape and fairly good soundtrack. If you ever visit Chile, please see this movie and you'll understand part of the Chilean character and history: under our modern facade, there's still Biancas, Pedros and Truebas. Thriller about some nonsense involving a meteor and Greenland Eskimos. The female lead has one speed: flat. Absolutely no heat between her and her alleged costar boyfriend. The little boy has a good part, but barely speaks. The plot is silliness. I was tired of Julia Ormond's non-stop anger about 20 minutes into this two hour film. Why didnt she just move back to Greenland if she was so angry about being taken from it? Good riddance! Watch if you have nothing else to do.

Altzheimers...whew, this is an accurate depiction of succumbing to its debilitating grip over mental and physical processes. In fact, I suspect that this film will become the definitive take on the subject, short of actual documentation; the acting from the leads is utterly compelling, achingly accurate(from my experiences of those afflicted with the disease). Its a downhill roll with little or no reprieve, though through the eyes of a supremely loving spouse, we feel that the diseases lessons are intolerably awkward to accept.
