VHS : The Mr. Bill Collection (The Best of Saturday Night Live)
All the material on this disk plus more is contained in the three-disk Definitive Collection which at the time of this writing is in print, available on Amazon, and very inexpensive (especially through 3rd-party sellers). What the D.C. lacks is any printed material that might be included with this Anchor Bay release.
Mr. Bill, BTW, seemed a lot funnier to me during his SNL run (this seems to be the general consensus), but even with hindsight, I'd probably still purchase the D.C., if only for an inexpensive trip down Memory Lane. Rating reflects the material, which I have seen, and not this particular release, which I haven't.

VHS : Mickey & the Beanstalk
I can't believe that this has gotten bad reviews!!! The only two things you really need to be scared of when buying this VHS tape is that there might be tracking problems (but there weren't any), and that VHS is now uh, extinct (not that I mind) A very good cartoon. It used to be a part of Fancy Fun and Free, but I thought that this by itself would be better (and it was). It is narrated by Ludwig Von Drake and he appears with his cute little cricket, Herman three times in the "movie". This great Mickey Mouse cartoon is very funny, entertaining, and well animated. One awsome thing about Mickey and the Beanstalk was Mickey was voiced by Walt Disney himself! It also has some veeeeery catchy songs. I keep finding my self quietly singing some of those songs!

The plot is basically this: ... Read More

VHS : The BEST Of Saturday Night Live: 15th Anniversary Special
This product has been run ragged by my family. The snippets of sketches, opening monologues, and musical skits are perfectly placed. It is a true gem in the collection of a staunch SNL fan. Little Chocolate Donuts, Il Returno de Hercules, Buh-Wheet, Mr. Rodgers, and Men's Synchro are just some of my favorites on this tape. If only NBC would come out with a DVD version! But please don't let the VHS style version fool you, this is one tape packed with huge laughs.

I also don't own this video, but I taped the original show when it aired in 2000. I would say it's the best compilation of SNL political sketches that has aired between 2000 and now (I didn't watch SNL prior to that). It is hilarious! I especially like Dukakis getting raised up on the podium at the beginning of the debate, and the Bush/Gore "strategery"/"lockbox" sketch. It's also noteworthy that back then, SNL actually made fun of both parties equally! (Compared to the current SNL season, where Palin was destroyed and Obama was coronated on the show.)

I finally found Coach Dobbs! I've been trying to remember for 15 years where I had seen a way-above average compilation of "SNL brand" material one foggy prime-time night years ago. The memory of Randy Quaid as Coach Dobbs getting beaned by a baseball over and over again, or Joe Flaherty as Abe Lincoln returning from a trip to the near future in his time machine (Catherine O'Hara as Mary Todd Lincoln:"What about me? Was I there?" Abe:"Yeah...you go nuts." Mary:"Damn!I knew it!!")have made me smile all these years and there lots of other reasons to want this unknown
but VERY funny compilation of skits made to support the then-popular SNL recurring character of Toonces the Cat. Made primarily by Christopher Guest and Robert Smigel, if you like snarky, tongue-in-cheek comic creativity, this half-hour tape is ... Read More

VHS : Best of Saturday Night Live Celebrity Spots: Jerry Seinfeld
This tape is more of a "must have" for Jerry Seinfeld fans or diehard SNL fans. For others, you may want to think twice before spending good money on this one. That is only because of the length, a mere 32 minutes (and that includes the video company's opening credits). The comedic skits and comedy bits are very good. I believe this originally aired in 1992, a couple of years BEFORE the TV show "Seinfeld" hit its prime. Jerry's fans will like this tape a lot. Especially the "Superman" sketch and the "game show" sketch (where the contestants answer questions, using Jerry's trademark delivery style). Again, if you're a fan of anything "Seinfeld," grab it while you can. It already seems like a collector's item to me. If you're an SNL fan, be aware that the only skits on this tape (except for the opening bit, before the monologue) ... Read More
