VHS : Bonnie & Clyde
As our nation teeters on the brink of what may be another Great Depression, it's poignant to look back on the last one. This movie was visually beautiful and artistically ground breaking, but the real story was much richer and darker.

They did not meet when Clyde was trying to steal Emma Parker's car; they met at a gathering of mutual friends and relatives when Bonnie was out of work.

Clyde was not gay or impotent, but an accomplished Cassanova who had serveral girlfriends, some serious, before he ever met Bonnie. Everyone who actually knew him testified to that. Also, banks were not his favorite target; convenience stores, gas stations, drug stores, and fruit stands were more his speed. He kept moving like a haunted man; when the owner got the death car back, she ... Read More

Dustin Hoffman is great in this classic Western. It's one of the best Westerns out there. Hoffman plays a cavalry man who ends up living among the Native Americans. It's a bitter story of how poorly and unjustly were these people treated. Unfortunately, they're not faring much better today and the government does not treat them better either. There are some truths in this movie that we're still not willing to face and come to grips with today. This should be a required material for school kids and grown ups alike. We'd be much more grateful for what we have instead of complaining for what we can't buy if we thought about these things more.

1969 was a turning point in American history. And this film is still living on the hippy dream, on the flower kids and their illusion that life is nothing but music and fun. Even the war and the draft are made small and insignificant, as if you could escape the draft because you had been arrested, tried and convicted of a crime like littering. Why not jaywalking? 1969 was the arrival of Nixon, the invasion of Cambodia, after the Tet offensive, escalation and blindness among all political personnel or politicians. The film thus is a full nightmare in disguise as a freewheeling period of complete enjoyment and happiness, wedding and champagne added as a reward for your trust in the future. And yet the film is a tremendous satire of that very short-sighted and careless spirit. Every detail is symbolical ... Read More

VHS : The Train
Well acted, well directed historical fiction about the Nazi invasion of France. Some parts too violent for young kids, but the train wrecks and explosions are masterpieces. Great movie!

I had noticed "Night Moves" inclusion in the "New York Times Best 1000 Movies". I like a good detective movie and I was looking forward to seeing it which I did last night. I was disappointed in the movie. In all fairness, my disappointment was borne in high expectations. However, I found the plot unnecessarily complicated (many will probably like this aspect). The characters were too much. Our hero, for example, is a former All-Pro football player. Except for some access issues that could have easily been re-scripted to create the same scenarios, there was no need to create such an esoteric facet. We are treated to analysis of the private detective's incomplete relationship with his father which also took us aimlessly down a dead end. I could go on and on but the ending really caught me off ... Read More

VHS : Bonanza 8: Any Friend of Walters
Walter (the dog) was real!
Walter wandered into the mining camps surrounding Virginia City, Carson City, and Catgutt Gulch some time in the mid-1870's or 80's.
Walter went from camp to camp appearing to beg, mooching a bite to eat, while he was really searching for the killer of his previous owner.
Few suspected Walter of starting the avalanche which buried the culprit. Those who knew the truth were grateful to Walter for dispensing with the varmit, and Walter was never without a home ever after.

The "Walter" you see in this episode of Bonanza is very much like the Walter who actually lived back in the West in the late 19th century: He is friendly, astute, sensitive, vigilant, and vindictive.

There is a pen and ink drawing which still survives somewhere of the "real" ... Read More
