VHS : Way West
The one thing I have learned about the so-called "professional" reviewers of films is that they have built in prejudices and ideas just like the rest of us...so I really do not pay that much attention to a review, good or bad. As for The Way West" I have seen this film at least twice. I enjoyed it both times. While I like The Big Sky better, that is not to say I did not enjoy this film. Probably the one negative I have is Sally Fields portraying a young tramp who causes problems for others along the way. But then I was never a Sally Fields fan. I have nothing personal against her, but I liked other actresses much better. I did enjoy watching Robert Mitchum, Richard Widmark and Kirk Douglas; I consider all of them to be great actors, so what is not to like? And I liked Lola Albright's performance as well. ... VHS : The Undefeated
I've seen this film several times and I always find it disturbing because it strikes me as classic Hollywood in that though the Civil War is central to the film, at no point is slavery ever mentioned. Which is to say that the film turns on the reconciliation of North and South and their mutual interests, which come to the fore as they are fighting Mexicans. Though I must say that the scene with Wayne and Hudson swigging bourbon as they recount the war is entertaining, ultimately, the film's unwillingness to explore the nature of their difference--which could be their differing notions of whether people should be property (albeit John Wayne's films generally portray his relations with people of color as paternalistic at best), is left unexplored, as if the Civil War was some kind of minor family squabble that requires whites ... I loved westerns since I was a kid. John Wayne was king for me when it came to the western genre. I believe two new stars have risen on the frontier; Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott. They both have made several movies and everyone of them John Wayne would watch, if he could, and enjoy.

VHS : Premiere Episodes: Have Gun Will Travel, Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Wild Wild West
This First Draw set is an unbelieveably priced collection of the pilots or premier episodes of popular westerns of the past. Once I saw that two episodes of Have Gun Will Travel was included I was sold. Richard Boone playing Paladin was the epitome of cool decked out in his all black outfit and pencil thin moustache. One episode included a young Charles Bronson playing a bad guy.

A youthful, pre-spaghetti western Clint Eastwood playing in Rawhide also was something special. I was never a big fan of Gunsmoke but James Arness diligently does his thing as Marshal Matt Dillon in the pilot episode.

Also included in this set was the initial episode of the Wild Wild West which was a more recent and cutting edge western that I always enjoyed. Robert Conrad and Ross Martin playing secret agents working for President ... Read More
