This movie is to me Andrei Konchalovsky at his very best.

One of the darkest periods of the Russian history told through the eyes of the innocent Ivan Sanshin. Communist Joseph Stalin purportedly killed millions of fellow Russians through famines, executions, deportations, and in the Gulag, most of them for political reasons. No opposition was allowed whatsoever, and Russia experienced the horrors of a blood-thirsty despotic regime with an asphyxiating cult to the "leaders'" persona.

As we see Ivan Sanshin's story develop in the movie (Tom Hulce), we can't help but wonder how many peoples along history have blindfoldedly fallen in the depths of savage and ruthless regimes?

How many more will keep falling?

We have lessons to learn from "The ... Read More

I recorded this one back in the early nineties from HBO and I still have it.

Naturally, by today's standards, it looks awful. But since I like the story and the acting in it, I am willing to forget about its flaws in picture quality.

Yet, as for so many other little "jewels and gems" out there, seemingly nobody has the time to find a pristine copy and slam it onto DVD...

Is it because in this case, it was produced by The Cannon Group, a production company long gone, who was managed by the Golan-Globus team?

OK, so the company does not exist anymore, but has anybody thought at buying the rights and make it their own?
Just as it has happened for really crappy movies in the past?

Perhaps crap is better than art.

I also remember ... Read More

When will this be released on DVD! Julie Andrews, in the right director's hands, is capable of brilliance, and this film shows it. This is a raw performance by Andrews, in which she took risks she rarely took elsewhere (even in the films directed by her husband, who was perhaps not her best director). There's now a sad parallel in her character's plight and her own life (years after this movie) in that both Stephanie and Andrews each lose the talents that informed their lives and self-images: Stephanie loses her ability to play the violin (because of MS) and Andrews, about a decade after filming "Duet" lost her ability to sing. It's also sad that the industry didn't recognize Andrews' Oscar-worthy performance in DUET. If it had, or if the film had landed commercially, I suspect we would have seen Andrews in more ... A breathtaking story written with humor, love and class. It keeps you alert and interested all over the four hours of action. Successfully blends private stories into a more general context. A Russian and more sensitive Forest Gump.

VHS : Runaway Train
I saw this many years ago and found it on sale recently. It is a superb movie, one of the best! The scenery is breath-taking, the plot rivoting, acting is top notch, and has a startling ending. There is also some rough language from the prisoners in the jail and the escaped convicts which I could have lived without, but it is realistically done.

Two prisoners escape from a maximum security prison and hop on board a train whose engineer dies, leaving the train as a runaway with nobody on board able to stop it. Jon Voight turns in a tour de force performance as convict Manny, a fierce, crazed individual running from himself. His tag-along buddy, Buck, is an obnoxious fellow who is trying to ingratiate himself with Manny, but is not really a hard core con. They are joined by Sara, a train worker who fell asleep during the commotion. ... Read More

It's no Lethal Weapon; I bought this cause I thought it was cool when I was a kid, not so cool as an adult when you can understand all the dialogue, in fact, you can probably say it sucks(a technical movie review term). But if you are into the whole 80's action movie genre then this would suit your tastes.

For you foreign film lovers that don't mind sub-titles, A+++!!! I enjoy an occasional foreign film and I truly can not believe I had not heard of this movie until now. Excellent writing/directing and the acting in this movie is top notch, escpecially by the main character played by Julia Vysotsky (Zhanna). The underlying theme of the movie (in my opinion) was the absurdity(ies) of war portrayed against the backdrop of an insane assylum during the Chechen War and the undying love of the main character, Zhanna (mental patient), and her imaginary engagement to pop singer Bryan Adams. Yes, Bryan Adams is in this movie and even sings to Zhanna in her daydreams/delusions. I could go on and on, but see it for yourself...Great Film, Highly Recommend it!

I saw this when it was first out, and I was shocked that it was billed as a comedy (like Nicolas Cage's The Weather Man also was last year), when it was nothing at all like a comedy. In fact it was a quite depressing movie. I suspect that those responsible for writing movie posters just don't bother to actually watch the movie, and just guess on the genre, based on the starring actors.
