VHS : The Night of the Generals
German Army officer Grau, a colonel in Wehrmacht Intelligence, is talking to a French policeman, Inspector Morand, in Paris. The year is 1944. For two years Grau has been investigating the psychopathic murder of a prostitute that took place in Warsaw. The suspects are three Wehrmacht general officers. Says Inspector Morand as he wonders why Grau is so persistent in his investigation, "Murder is the occupation of generals."

"Then let us say," Grau replies, "what is admirable on the large scale is monstrous on the small. Since we must give medals to mass murderers, why not give justice to the small entrepreneur."

The Night of the Generals is a mess. It sprawls all over the place, from Poland to Paris to Germany; from 1942 to 1944 to 1963. We have everything from warfare ... Read More

VHS : Goodbye Again
This love story, initially called Aimez-vous Brahms (Do You Like Brahms?) contains all of the themes necessary to make it a continuous classic.
Three major performances given by three tremendous actors. Ingrid Bergman in one of her later roles is heart-breakingly beautiful, and Anthony Perkins gives a performance so joyful, vulnerable and nuanced, I find something different in it every time I see it.
Add to it a time in Paris that is magical and a score by Brahms that is unforgettable.
When will this be available in DVD?!

VHS : Five Miles To Midnight
Don't you love Anthony Perkins? He's at his very best in FIVE MILES TO MIDNIGHT, a suspense thriller from the last days of JFK's administration. He's teamed with his perdurable co-star Sophia Loren, the tasty Italian import whom Tony first met as they played country bumpkins in a ludicrous adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS. Here Sophia is playing a European woman, which is all to the good, who somehow gets entangled with a mixed up American vet, sort of like Howard Hughes, played by Tony Perkins. What Sophia Loren doesn't realize is that her husband is crazy, abusive and violent!

Another 25 years later they re-did this movie with Julia Roberts playing the abused wife who fakes her own death to escape from a savage hubby. Here PERKINS fakes his own death to avoid financial ... Read More

I would recommend this film for classic film fans only--and even then, I was disappointed.

The film opens in an amazing scene: the beautiful, yet tormented looking, Virginia seems to awaken from some sleep or haze on a park bench. She hears a voice. She is not quite sure where she is, or what she is doing...The mystery of it all draws you into this truly amazing story.

We learn where Virginia is, but not why she is there just yet. She is in a state mental hospital. Via a flashback of her husband's recount of their relationship we learn why he put her here.

Then the movie turns into a psychoanalyst-lover's dream. A little too textbook for my taste: everything is linked to a traumatic childhood, unreasonable guilt, and a lack of love. Transference and hysterical ... Read More

VHS : The Sisters (1938)
Bette Davis and Errol Flynn star in this rather undervalued 1930s drama called Sisters. The plot moves along at a good pace and the convincing acting had me every step of the way. This is one Better Davis movie that is truly worth watching; and Errol Flynn fans will want this one as well!

The action starts at a ball in Silver Bow, Montana, to celebrate the election of Teddy Roosevelt to the presidency in 1904. We meet the Elliott sisters and their parents. Helen Elliott (Anita Louise) marries a rich older man in a marriage of convenience while Grace (Jane Bryan) marries Tom Knivel (Dick Foran). Louise (Bette Davis), however, falls in love at first sight with Frank Medlin (Errol Flynn) and elopes with him just one week later; Louis and Frank head for San Francisco where Frank lives to live a happily married ... 9.The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse starring: Edward G. Robinson, Humphrey Bogart, Claire Trevor, Allen Jenkins, Donald Crisp

VHS : The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse
The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse is a fascinating study of crime. Edward G. Robinson (Little Caesar, Hole In The Head, A Boy Ten Feet Tall, etc.) plays Dr. Clitterhouse, a society surgeon who embarks on a life of crime - as an experiment. He hopes to prove his theory about criminal behavior changing the personality of the criminal.
The first part of the film is a bit on the lighter side as the doctor swipes jewels and easily evades police. He eventually leads a band of thieves (formerly led by Humphrey Bogart, who gets noticeably resentful) on bigger and bigger heists. Claire Trevor (Stagecoach, Key Largo, The High and The Mighty, etc.) is their fence. Unfortunately the plot drags a bit in the middle when it's unclear how serious to take it. But it becomes more fascinating as he follows through with his criminal experiences ... Read More
