VHS : Thoroughbreds Don't Cry
Thoroughbreds Don't Cry provides us with the first look at the wonderful pairing of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. The plot moves along at a good pace and there are a few twists and turns to hold your attention as well.

The action begins in England when Sir Peter Calverton (C. Aubrey Smith) decides to take his racehorse, The Pookah, to America to enter the horse in a race. Sir Calverton takes along his grandson Roger Calverton (Ronald Sinclair) for the trip. They arrive in America and want to engage the rather arrogant Timmie Donovan (Mickey Rooney) to be the horse's jockey. At first Timmie and Roger don't exactly hit it off; but after a little finesse and diplomacy on Sir Calverton's part, Timmie decides to be the jockey for The Pookah.

The Pookah doesn't win because Timmie ... Read More

VHS : Eddie Cantor Story
Eddie Cantor was a popular entertainer from the beginning of the 20th century. He grew up in the slums of New York, finding himself in trouble with the local gangs, though at heart he was always a good boy (Richard Monda). Fearful that her son might grow up the wrong way, his grandmother (Aline MacMahon) lets him go on the stage with Gus Edwards (Hal March). He (Keefe Brasselle) grows up to be quite the attention hog, but always a good hearted man. Slowly, his fame rises, but with each new set of hands to applaude, Cantor becomes even more restless in the pursuit of fame, even at the expense of his wife (Marilyn Erskine), children, and health.

There are many other famous names peppered throughout the film including Florenz Ziegfeld, Will Rogers and Jimmy Durante.

There are also ... Read More

VHS : Baby Face (1933)
I had the priveledge to see one of the first screenings of the rediscovered un-cut version of this film a few weeks ago at Brandeis University, and I must say that the New York censor board truly did this film a disservice when it forced the producers to cut and change it. It was really great, but the most interesting part was at the end when they showed clips of the edited version to show what was changed, and it was astounding how rediculous the edits seemed in context of the meaning behind the film.

VHS : Top Banana
There are two excellent reasons for watching this filmed Broadway stage show that stars Phil Silvers as Jerry Biffle, the headliner of a popular television comedy show (and patterned after Milton Berle). First, there's the rare chance to see Phil Silvers in prime, ego-driven form. Jerry Biffle is a great comedian. He also has an ego as big as a brachiosaurus. He's a whistle-blowing, finger-snapping terror who runs every aspect of his show and tries to run every aspect of the people who work for him. He needs jokes like a starving man needs manna. He can punch home a one liner as hard as Rocky Marciano. He's loud, aggressive and funny. The second reason is to watch Silvers work with a collection of second bananas who, like Silvers, cut their low-comedy teeth working years in burlesque. There's Jack Albertson as ... Read More

VHS : Disraeli (1929)
This is one of the few very early talkies that is neither a musical nor an overly dull stage production. It is a fascinating look into a very brief episode in the professional life of British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli - specifically his effort in obtaining the Suez Canal for Great Britain. Arliss gives a well-deserved Academy Award winning performance as the prime minister, and he is so adept at dialogue and with conveying his mood with glances and small gestures and the pace of the film is so brisk that you hardly notice the 1929 movie camera that cannot budge an inch. In this short 90 minute film Disraeli plays matchmaker, mentor, breaker of a spy ring, and master dealmaker with a sophistocation of dialogue and acting that is rarely seen in films for another ten years. Particularly moving is the portrayal of Disraeli's ... Read More

VHS : Meet the Stewarts
Meet the Stewarts is a delightful, romantic comedy starring William Holden and Frances Dee. Mr. Holden's character, Mike is a lawyer who was financially supported by his sister. Ms. Dee's character is Candy, a spoiled. pampered, and rich daddy's little girl. Grant Mitchell is wonderful portraying Candy's father. He honesty believes that Mike is only interested in marrying his daughter for her money. Mike loves Candy dearly but doesn't want to marry Candy because of her money. Mike poses the question to Candy if she can live on budgets. Candy replies, " I don't know if I can eat them, but I'm certain I'll love 'em." If you have seen the movie "Woman of the Year," you will thoroughly enjoy the cooking scene in Meet the Stewarts. It is definitely more hilarious.
