VHS : Devil's Disciple (1959)
This is one of my favorite movies. Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas are in thier prime, both sexy and studley. If they really had ministers like Lancaster, I'd never miss church. The story, adapted from a play is a bit stagey, but it's very enjoyable. I liked the black and white photography as well. The best part of this picture is Lawrence Olivier as General Burgoyne. He is just so fantastic. He steals every scene he's in and the wordplay between him and Kirk Douglas is really entertaining.
Also the score is very good. It's a nice movie and I can remember seeing this in the movies with my grandmother when I was 8. It still brings back great memories.

VHS : Sweet Smell of Success
I always sort of put off seeing this even though I've heard good things about it. I think it was because Tony Curtis is in it and the only thing I've ever seen him do were really bad introductions to some Alfred Hitchcock DVDs. In those introductions, Curtis fumbled his lines (which were often filled with errors) and so I assumed he was the worst actor in the world. I should kick myself.

This movie is not only one of the best "noir" films I've seen but one of the best movies I've ever seen PERIOD.

It's included in the noir category despite it not being a crime drama at all. The reason for this is it's shadow-filled cinematography and its theme of corruption. According to this movie, human beings are bleak, cold-hearted creatures.

It's about a Broadway ... Read More

Very few films achieve perfection but this one comes close to it. Alec Guiness as the leader of a band of dysfunctional robbers, is wonderful. I won't try to summarize the movie, that's been done enough already...but...Guiness rents a flat from a very nice, little old lady and tells her that he and his musician friends will be practicing a lot. In fact they are planning their grand heist.

The little old lady, who is ever so helpful, is constantly butting in to the increasing unhappiness of the gang. Ultimately, our boys decide that they will need to 'rub the old lady out'. Unfortunately, none of them really wants to be the hit man. Nevertheless, a killer is chosen but fails miserably and is ultimately killed himself. Guiness as gang leader grows increasingly neurotic with unbelievable facial ... Read More

VHS : The Guns of Navarone (Special Edition)
The reissued DVD version of THE GUNS OF NAVARONE is a great improvement over my tired old VHS copy. Not only is the film in widescreen presentation, the color and sound is superior to the tape version.

As with most Alistair MacLean inspired movies we find a story with a handful of commandos, plan gone awry with double agents in their midst, battling a large contingent of the Wehrmacht. One wonders what the Germans were doing with all that substantial air power, armor, and artillery on a small island at a time when the Eastern front was collapsing. The same situation was encountered in WHERE EAGLES DARE and FORCE TEN FROM NAVARONE.

The Plot: In a bid to gain a foothold on the Dodecanese Islands the British landed a force on Kheros. Unfortunately the Germans had other plans and isolated ... Read More

VHS : Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad
A zany black comedy about a typical family consisting of a domineering mother (Rosalind Russell), two man-eating piranhas, several Venus flytraps, a baby son - aged twenty-five! (Robert Morse), a lecherous babysitter (Barbara Harris), and a father (Jonathan Winters) who just happens to be a stuffed corpse hanging in the closet!

Based on the hit play by Arthur L. Kopit, Oh Dad is a blending of riotous comedy with dramatic elements that move within close range of tragedy. Black-as-pitch, hysterical and sadly ignored upon its initial release, the film boasts a terrific cast headed by the brilliant Russell, (Auntie Mame), who has seldom been funnier as the acid tongued Madame Rosepettle. Right in step is the incandescent Ms. Harris reprising her stage role as Rosalie the hotel babysitter -- and Madame Rosepettle's arch-nemesis. ... Read More

I recorded this off TCM last week, mostly because I saw it had an appearance by Sharon Tate from the same year she did "The Fearless Vampire Killers." Which is, of course, a perfectly good reason to see any movie.

And while there's a fair amount here to satisfy people who just want to see Tate -- specifically some long, strange shots of her in a bikini bouncing endlessly on a beachside trampoline -- there's a lot more going on here.

"Waves" is basically a rake's progress tale as stammering, backstory-free Tony Curtis arrives in California and charms/scams his way to the top of a Malibu swimming pool empire.

Along the way he meets the aforementioned Tate (as a vacant but intrepid skydiver named ... Malibu); an accident-prone, broken-English-spouting Claudia Cardinale who destroys Curtis' little VW and then helps ... Read More

The film opens on an English textile mill that is up for sale. It uses man-made fibers. A device attracts attention by management. Who authorized it? At what cost? A graduate from Cambridge was experimenting and discovered what the result was. The scenes show life in the 1940s. The monetary figures date this story. One firm bought an electronic microscope and needs Mr. Stratton's help. [No employee badges then.] There is a romance between Daphne Birnley, the millionaire mill owner's daughter, and the owner of that small mill. Stratton has an idea for the polymerization of molecules to develop a long chain that will revolutionize the textile industry. Will it have unintended consequences? Sidney Stratton goes to see Mr. Birnley. There is comedy in the interaction of people who don't understand each other. But the mill owner wants to beat the competition.
