VHS : Picture of Dorian Gray (1945)
This is an excellent movie. A little gem, quite unknown to me until today, just like the director himself. Directed without any fireworks, just plain and modest narrative genius. Wonderful interpretations from everybody. A delight just to watch the characters interact, and listen to them, regardless of the story itself.

The film is beautiful, and thanks God it long, not like most of this time films that as soon as you are starting to like them it's already ending. Great cast. A moralistic story, a lot of food for thought. Beautiful black and white, beautiful score with small pieces by Chopin and Beethoven. A delight. George Sanders amazed me in his role as an amicable cynic. It just suits him as a glove.

Albert Lewin's independently produced and directed UK film PANDORA AND THE FLYING DUTCHMAN (1951) is one of the most ethereal and haunting love stories ever filmed. Lewin directs with keen eyes and doesn't often stray from the ethereal atmosphere, to the viewers delight. We get truly superb performances by the entire cast, particularly Ava Gardner, who delivers a heart-felt and very memorable performance. Not to mention the other-worldly photography, which is beautifully shot by two-time Oscar winner, the master cinematographer, Jack Cardiff (BLACK NARCISSUS,THE RED SHOES). Another major addition to this film is the musical score by classical composer Alan Rawsthorne, which is dream-like and uplifting, yet blended with a sense of melancholy. The score also blends poetically with the other-worldly ... Read More

VHS : Private Affairs of Bel Ami
Yet another entry in my quest to see Warren William movies, "The Private Affairs of Bel Ami" is really a starring vehicle for George Sanders, the definitive cad of Hollywood. He holds special attractions for hosts of women, all of whom he misuses while furthering his own selfish desires. I hated the look of this picture; to me, it seemed like a set from "The Twilight Zone"--very unconvincing-looking Paris. Besides Sanders and William, the cast includes Ann Dvorak, John Carradine, and Angela Lansbury. See it if you want to; I don't figure on seeing it again for a couple of years, if then.

...of perhaps history's greatest novel.

I first read the book many years ago and fell in love with it. Then I fell in love with the work of Paul Gaugin of whom the book is a fictional biography. Yeah, yeah, there's the romanticism involved, i.e., a curator told me Gaugin apparently died of syphillus (though I'd read before that he died of heart failure). But Charles Strickland/Paul Gaugin represent the height of individualism: leave the comfortable behind for the unknown even though you don't know exactly what you're pursuing.

George Sanders, with whom I wasn't familiar, played Strickland. I thought he portrayed the role very well. He even laughed at the right places! (And, interestingly, Sanders seemed to have a little of the Strickland/Gaugin in his heart, if you read of ... Read More
