After seeing a revival of Carnival at the Kennedy Center about two years ago, I wanted to see this. When I found a used copy recently, I was disturbed. The story focuses on a woman who borders on social retardation and a man who loves her who is emotional abusive unless he's using his puppets to communicate emotion. Hmmm. Worth watching, but what it says about gender roles in mid-century America is just downright disturbing.

Remembered this from my youth. Was a treat to see again. Granddaughters (4&6) enjoyed the dancing and beautiful costumes along with me.

VHS : Boys' Night Out
There were a lot of humorous surprises in this movie. For starters, James Garner lives with his mother and is a nerdy weather buff! Then there's Kim Novak, who takes to the role of a seductress with aplomb, only a minute after she arrives for what she thought was an apartment inspection. The 1950s-style paternalism all the men dish out to Novak in spite of their lurid extramarital fantasies is downright charming. I give this movie two thumbs up, and am sure you will too.

VHS : Touch of Evil
A big "Citizen Kane" fan in my youth, I saw Touch of Evil in 1981 and thought it was simply awful. Then recently I heard of this reissue, and thought I'd buy it and watch it again. I discovered that in our youth we often know what's right, but often doubt ourselves. The movie is still awful. It may be more true to Welle's vision, but it's still awful. His talent had gone, quite obviously, by this time.

Many of us want so desperately to find Welles' later work important that we'll do almost anything to trick ourselves into thinking it is. Most often men do this... women know it may quack like a duck but it ain't no duck. This movie is hard to watch, not credible, the writing is unnatural and stilted, the premise preposterous.

Yes, the opening crane shot is elaborate and done in ... Read More

VHS : Arrivederci, Baby!
When Tony Curtis was "hot" in movies, he was invited to play the leading role in this comedy of a ladykiller who weds rich women and then creatively engineers their demise with the help of his valet. Naturally,
he runs through his money and needs to try again.

It's a very funny film...because the characters don't take themselves too seriously. Trouble brews when Tony Curtis' last catch wants to knock HIM off, because she (mistakenly) thinks he's rich! So finally two lovers get whom they deserve. My favorite episode is the one with Joan Greenwood as an oversexed English lady who loves fox hunting and horses.

VHS : Queen of Outer Space
Queen Of Outer Space is a top notch 1950's Sci-Fi B-Movie which stars Zsa-Zsa Gabor and Laurie Mitchell(from Missile To The Moon). The plot features a group of Earthmen who were traveling to a space station when their spaceship was crashed landed on Venus, instantly they were captured by a race of dominant Venusian Warrior Women under the order of their queen(Mitchell). The queen then reveals a devious plan to destroy the Earth, but her plans are stopped by the Earthmen and a rebel scientist(Gabor) and her friends who are against the queen. The audio commentaries by Mitchell and film historian Tom Weaver gives a lot of history of the film. This movie is perfect for Saturday afternoons and late-night viewing.

I remember LOVING this movie as a kid. Instead of Prince Charming being the knight in shining armor, it's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfelles who turn around and save *him*... I loved Lord Malice, Sunburn and Scowl the Owl (though I could never figure out why a guy like him would hang around someone who's *that* annoying). I could tell the film was pretty rare and was obviously not made by Disney.

I think a possible point of the film was feminine power, that the princess is just as capable of rescuing the prince as the other way around. The "Shadowman" adds a hint of mystery on their journey to the Realm of Doom (I would've liked to see more of this journey, they pretty much cut to the chase which was a mistake, there could've been some real character development along the way). The owl provides comic relief and is an interesting ... Read More
