This followup show to the original is very well thought out and carries on the Christian theme of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

VHS : A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
I love Richard Lester's style of direction( Hard Day's Night, The Ritz, Three Muskateer's etc). Zero Mostel in a role that rivals his performance in the Producer's will have you rolling on the floor. Phil Silvers is at his best as a wheeler dealer. The Roman Empire lasted in spite of the shenanigans here. A story of mixed up love and misdirection. Will they pull it off or will they fall to the conquerer who raped Thrace thrice? Anyway it's a very funny movie at a greta price.

The various blanket infringements on the rights of American citizens and others since the criminal events of 9/11 hardly represent the first time that the American government has seen fit to curtail those rights. The Palmer Raids roundup of reds, radicals and foreigners in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution at the tail end of World War I comes to mind. As done the subject of this film, the red scare against communist and other labor radicals after World War II with the onset of the Cold War against the Soviet Union, a former ally. The name of this period narrowly is given in the history books as the McCarthy witch-hunt era, although that hardly dose justice to the widespread political paranoia, high and low, in America at that time. The signature event was the execution of the Rosenbergs, Julius ... Read More

VHS : The Producers
Newcomer Gene Wilder in his first hit movie plays the foil (fool?) to Zero Mostel's cagey, corrupt and over-the-hill broadway producer.

For fans of Mel Brooks you see the first glimpses of his movie madness and genius. Brooks pens some of the most absurd and hilarious songs ever written, and directs over the tops performances by each and every cast member.

Some might say the movie is perhaps a bit "dated" for younger audiences, but that didn't seem to deter laughs from the teens and youngsters at my viewing. I guess zany comedies reach across the generations.

This is Bogart at his best. What a great movie. I have watched it over and over, it is that good. This movie was made before I was born, FILM NOIR, I love it. The old movies are made with such grace and style. Don't miss this movie.

VHS : Dubarry Was a Lady
"Be brave, my friend. You are dying for your country!" says The Black Arrow (Gene Kelly) to his pal, the grubby Taliostra (Zero Mostel), as the tumbrel bears them to the guillotine.

"Yeah," says Taliostra, "but I was born in the city." Expect much more of the same with Du Barry Was a Lady.

The 1939 Broadway smash starred two powerful performers, Bert Lahr and Ethel Merman, a first rate, innuendo-filled set of songs by Cole Porter, and lots of girls and gags. So what did MGM do when the studio bought the rights? Ditched Merman and Lahr and almost all of the Porter songs. (To be fair, a good many of Porter's lyrics would not have gotten past Hollywood's Code of Decency). MGM kept the girls.

MGM bought the rights for three reasons...to have a vehicle to showcase its up-and-coming comic ... Read More

Bogart seemed destined for a painful end as he plied his despicable trade in a tale set in French-occupied Damascus around 1925...

Casting his lot between the French and Syrians, depending upon which suits his own greedy plan most profitably, he earns the enmity of both sides...

There were good supporting performances by Lee J. Cobb, thumping his desk as usual as a French colonel, and Everett Sloane as a volatile general, but the film was of little consequence and a sorry end to Bogart's solo production credits...

"Sirocco" remains a tedious romantic drama in the "Casablanca" vein but with none of the magic...

Since I was teaching the short story I wanted to also show the film.
Loved seeing young Harry Belefonte and early Zero Mostel but the film does not have
impact of the short story and drags. The musical score is really irritating.
The two main characters were actually miscast, according to the story.
