VHS : Ruggles of Red Gap
Charles Laughton is sublime as Marmaduke Ruggles, long time British manservant to the Earl of Burnstead in the delightful comedy "Ruggles Of Red Gap. After years of servility Ruggles' services are won as a result of a poker bet to Egbert Floud of Red Gap, Washington played by Charlie Ruggles. Floud, a throwback to the days of the old West, is being cultured and refined while in Paris by his wife Effie played by a haughty and domineering Mary Boland.

The plan is for Ruggles to accompany the Flouds back to Red Gap. With much hidden trepidation, the genteel Laughton assents to his new assignment in the frontier like Red Gap. Egbert, who is not used to the idea of servitude treats Laughton with cordiality and equality which is unfamiliar to him.

VHS : Greed (75th Anniversary Restoration)
I'm amazed that this masterpiece of film art isn't available on DVD. It should be.

Even without the benefit of music this must be one of the most rivetting films I've ever encountered. It is a fairly literal adaption of "Mc Teague" by Frank Norris, a realist author who straddled the last century. It is brilliantly brought to the screen by Erich von Stroheim, a Hollywood director of considerable merit who fell out of favor with his boss and with the system in general.

The film's extreme length made it impossible to screen successfully and the many attempts to pare it down were well-meaning but doomed to failure. Nevertheless, what remains is still wonderful to look at with some electrifying performances and a deliberate, inevitable pace. ZaSu Pitts was a remarkable actress ... Read More

This is a fabulous movie. Great plot, cute kids, clean humor (even the adult parts) without being cheesy and old fashioned. This is my absolute favorite Doris Day movie. Every actor, including the kids, pulls it off so believably. I highly recommend this movie for every Doris Day or James Garner fan and even those who aren't.

VHS : Dames
Dames is an outstanding movie musical with Busby Berkeley numbers that will make your eyes pop out! Finished shortly before the Hayes Production Code went into effect, this lavish musical gets its strength and appeal from the incredibly wonderful song and dance numbers. This is a must have for fans of classic movie musicals!

The action starts when Ezra Ounce (Hugh Herbert), a stuffy older multimillionaire, decides to come to New York to create a foundation against the "filthy" Broadway shows--and give his relative Horace Peter Hemingway (Guy Kibbee) ten million dollars for being a pure man of high morals. Of course, trouble ensues when Horace's daughter Barbara (Ruby Keeler) falls in love with her 13th cousin Jimmy Higgens (Dick Powell). Barbara is encouraged by her parents Horace and Matilda (Zasu ... Read More

VHS : Denver & The Rio Grande
Pop your popcorn and settle in for a 1950's-style Matinee Western that from an acting point of view is just barely a B-movie, but railroad enthusiasts will watch this VHS over and over again.

The true stars of this flick are the old Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge from Durango to Silverton, and the Colorado scenery. Rio Grande enthusiasts will also be totally intrigued by the rare opening footage of Rio Grande ALCO PA's in silver paint for CZ duty, and many FT and F3 covered wagons still in black paint fresh from the EMD factory erecting floors. There is even a short cab ride through Glenwood Canyon, and an interesting long shot at Dotsero.

Engines 268 and 315 are in bumble bee makeup, and while the story line is both campy and corny, the many action shots of these fine machines are ... Read More

VHS : Francis Joins the Wacs
When i watched this, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was still as funny as I remembered it to be. When I was younger, I was a fan of the Francis films, and watched whenever they came on TV back in the Fifties. When I found this one,it was like discovering an old friend and finding that though times had changed,it didn't lessen my appreciation for the films-or my enjoyment when I saw them again.

VHS : Francis the Talking Mule
Peter Stirling (Donald O'Connor) is a former bank clerk turned soldier who finds himself cast in role of reluctant hero when he strikes up a friendship with Francis, an Army mule who can talk (voiced by Chill Wills, and played by a female named Molly). Ala Cyrano de Bergerac, Francis helps Peter to win the girl of his dreams, a shapely nurse named Patricia (Maureen Gelder). Unfortunately, the stubborn mule thinks mum's the word whenever Peter tries to tell others of the critter's gift of gab: This sends Peter to the psych ward more than once, where he becomes an expert basket-weaver. Several sequels kicked the Francis franchise into high gear, making for a memorably fun series of silly and cute family films. Based upon a novel by David Stern.
