VHS : Roots 6 Video Box Set
Perhaps the most famous TV miniseries of all time. Played for eight straight evenings in January of 1977. The country practically came to a halt during that time slot every evening. Over 130 million views tuned in to watch this amazing story of Alex Haley's family's roots and history. It has been translated into 28 languages since. While the story and technology may seem a little outdated today (how can it not?), this is one story worth watching to gain a better understanding our country's history and where we have come from. In many ways it is the story of our nation from the days of slavery through the great struggles for freedom for all. Kunta Kinte is the main character who was captured and forced into slavery as a young man and brought to America. Perhaps the most poignant moment in the ... Read More

VHS : Band of Angels
Band of Angels: the acting is passable, not fantastic, but fair enough for a B-Movie. The sets & costumes are wonderful to look at, which is the main reason I'm giving this one 3 stars. The story is entertaining to the end, so in that respect, this is worth seeing at least once. The one actress holding this movie back was Yvonne de Carlo. She's much too old for the part, and not at all believable as being "mulatto" or "quadroon." At times its painful watching her struggle with her lines. They should have cast an actress who was truly of mixed-race to play the part, and a much younger one at that. Then maybe this film would sing the way it was intended. Overall Band of Angels struck me as a dime-store romance novel transported to film.

VHS : It Started in Naples
An American lawyer (Clark Gable) comes to Naples to settle the affairs of his deceased brother, only to learn he has an eight year old nephew being raised by an aunt (Sophia Loren), a local cabaret singer. Predictably, aunt and uncle disagree on how the child should be raised, and, just as predictably, fall in love.

The film tries to portray the Neopolitans as simple fun-loving people, contrasted with the serious, stuffy American lawyer, but it does not work for me. Clark Gable was 59 when the film was released; he moves stiffly and his face seems pudgy at times, while Sophia Loren was only 26 (and quite healthy). Therein lies the problem: the story is not a May-December romance, and the aging Gable is not convincing as a romantic partner for the young and lovely Sophia.

Great movie! Cute story. Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne have a magnetic chemistry which makes this movie work. Chill Wills is always fabulous in his supporting role. Comedy, romance, love, stubborn pride, etc.
Nice romantic comedy with a western setting.

I LOVE this movie! I make it a point to watch it every Christmas - and you will see why as the movie climaxes during the Christmas season! It is a beautiful tear-jerker...and very inspiring as we realize the hand of God is on our lives...yes, He does take care of us even when we don't believe that He does during our "winter" season. A must-have movie!

This is classic film noir in all respects: dark moody lighting, flawed "hero", femme fatale, jealous husband, gray-area moral quandaries, pessimistic tone, unhappy ending, jaded, pseudo-sophisticated dialog. How about this gem of dialog where the Burt Lancaster character says:

"A man eats an apple. He gets a piece of the core stuck between his teeth. He tries to work it out with some cellophane from a cigarette pack. What happens? The cellophane gets stuck in there too. Anna? What was the use. I knew that somehow I'd wind up seeing her that night."

I love the extended scene of the band playing an interesting rumba (a little over 2 minutes) when the Burt Lancaster character walks into the Round-Up Club, looking for Anna. They show Esy Morales and His Rumba Band playing a pretty swinging, pretty cool ... Read More

Most of these kung fu/martial arts films are very similar: a loner hero who gets the poop kicked out of him enough to show he's not superman; vile villains who have little acting ability; endangered damsels and often times they have a sidekick who's either incredibly stupid or in this case, a mildly retarded brother. Drugs are usually involved, and the hero gets to show off his muscles by doing kung fu dances with appropriately inappropriate music.
In DESERT KICKBOXER, we have unknown John Haymes Newton in the role of Hawk, a half breed who killed a competitor in a weekend kickboxing match. Hawk quits his job as a policeman and returns to his native Arizona land, becoming a reluctant deputy for Sheriff Larry (Biff Mardin). Larry seeks Hawk's help in busting up the drug empire of Santos (played with Orson Welleish aplomb) ... Read More
