I saw this movie after Funny Girl, and perhaps that wasn't the wisest choice. This film is the weaker of the two, but it is, after all a different film. Most people, I know, have seen Funny Girl, so this could be a disappointment if one is expected the same level of film. However, it can be terrific in its own way. Barbra gets to play a modern (at the time) character with Daisy Gamble, while at the same time playing Melina Tentrees, a British gal from the past. Her acting is great, and very entertaining. While Yves Montand is not exactly a perfect leading man, he does his best. 4 and 1/2 stars.

VHS : Goodbye Again
This love story, initially called Aimez-vous Brahms (Do You Like Brahms?) contains all of the themes necessary to make it a continuous classic.
Three major performances given by three tremendous actors. Ingrid Bergman in one of her later roles is heart-breakingly beautiful, and Anthony Perkins gives a performance so joyful, vulnerable and nuanced, I find something different in it every time I see it.
Add to it a time in Paris that is magical and a score by Brahms that is unforgettable.
When will this be available in DVD?!

I was 18 when I saw this movie for the first time, and it gave me quite a shock - for the first time, I realized a movie could be more than just entertainment, then it could inform, infuriate and chill you at the same time.
This movie depicts the events surrounding the death of the charismatic leader of a leftist Greek political faction. As the judge in charge investigates, he realizes that it isn't an accident, but murder, sanctioned by important people. These events are based on the real-life assassination of Gregorios Lambrakis in 1963.
The directing is taut, the actors excellent, and the tension mounts steadily. This is a movie you must see - and ponder seriously. How strong is democracy ? Can a faction in power manipulate events and push aside (or even kill) anyone who opposes it ... Read More

VHS : My Geisha
I have always been a sucker for anything with Shirley Maclaine in it, but I was pretty much in the same boat as Paul ( the fabulous Ives Montand ), her character's ( Lucy Dell's ) husband, when he doubted her ability to do the part of Madame Butterfly, particularly since he wanted a real Japanese
to play the part. Maclain nailed it however, and did it with the dignity and attention to detail that the part deserved, with few of the cliches Occidentals portraying Asian people at the time so often brought to the table ( Brando in TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON comes to mind ). Ives Montand was wonderful as Lucy Dell's husband, Paul, as was the great Edward G. Robinson in the part of their producer. Yoko Tani as Lucy's geisha tutor was both exquisite, and quietly witty.

The story itself was a lot ... Read More

6.Manon of the Spring starring: Yves Montand, Daniel Auteuil, Emmanuelle Béart, Hippolyte Girardot, Margarita Lozano

VHS : Manon of the Spring
Manon of the Spring is the sequel to Jean de Florette. Manon is the movie that ties both movies together perfectly. In this film, Manon, the hunchback's daughter, exacts her revenge by stopping the spring which feeds the local village. It is also in this film that the old blind woman reveals the heart breaking and utterly tragic truth to the one man who has hurt Manon the most. In the end, this greedy, wretched man loses everything -- literally -- and Manon gains everything.

Manon of the Spring is an exquisite movie. The cinematography is incredible, the storytelling is brilliant. The acting is unforgettable.

Great movie from the sixties, I remember vaguely some of the highlights but now I was able to relive it. I am very pleased.

VHS : State of Siege
The film "State of Siege" by Costa Gavras is as relevant today as the day it first came out. This film is a retelling of foreign Governments violent take over South American countries in the late 60s and early 70s. Much of these facts ca also be found in the book The Condor Years: How Pinochet and His Allies Brought Terrorism to Three Continents by John Dinges. A must see thriller that reveals the struggle in Latin America by a group of individuals who named themselves after Tupac Amaru the Great Inca Guerilla warrior who fought against the Spanish to free Peru. The Tupamaros history is well represented in this film but you won't find a DVD or reasonable priced copy of it in the US for various political reasons. I suggest Brazil or Europe.

VHS : Where the Hot Wind Blows
THE LAW/WHERE THE HOT WIND BLOWS shows Gina Lollobrigida at 31, in top form both as a beautiful woman and as an actress. God, how gorgeous she was, and how hot, sensual, desirable is her Marietta! No wonder every man in town lusts after her! The whole cast is wonderful: Mastroianni, Mercouri, Montand, Stoppa and the great Pierre Brasseur. Jules Dassin's direction does justice to the Vailland novel, for the most part. It is urgent to restore this film and release it in DVD format with extras, including a competent critical commentary.
