'57 is a classic par excellence, but '97 does offer some interesting new features. I use both of the films as a means of processing a vast array of psychological concepts while working with first and second year college students. When I first stop the '97 version, I ask students if they heard anything at the onset of the film. There is a clever insertion of the line, "I'm gonna' kill you," as the sound track presents us with noise of a passing El train. Many of my students can't identify what the voice said, and some don't even remember hearing it.

The '97 cameras pan the room differently during the preliminary vote and do not allow us to see the effect of group conformity to the norm as it is registered in '57 version. The guilty vote is not as polarized as it may superficially ... Read More

I wanted to like this movie & I know that it's heart is in the right place, but it is probably the dumbest movie ever made. Dumb as in profoundly lacking in intelligence. As in trivializing something meaningful. I can't express how much I didn't like this.

3.Passed Away starring: Bob Hoskins, Jack Warden, William Petersen, Diana Bellamy, Don Brockett

William Peterson's showcase performance as a sympathetic prototype of Dan Quayle proves that, long before CSI, he was capable of complex subtlety and timing. This ensemble piece does well with the "eccentric family" genre, and can be thanked in passing for featuring a human but non-degenerate priest--a rarity in movies for decades now.

VHS : Ransom of Red Chief (1975)
After teaching O. Henry's story, "The Ransom of Red Chief," I showed this video to my classes. It is difficult to catch the attention of this age student, but they loved the video. Many even were laughing out loud at the shenanigans of the characters, particularly when the child "got over" on the adults. The actors, particularly Jack Elam, appear to be perfectly cast. This version stays true to the original short story.

This is the most amazing movie. Barack Obama was recently asked which movie he felt had the best presidential performance. He responded, "Jeff Bridges in The Contender". A must see movie. Love the price and I received it timely.

VHS : Manhunter (Widescreen Director's Cut Edition)
When it comes to the "serial killer genre," I suppose Michael Mann's 1986 film "Manhunter" began it all. One could argue for Richard Fleischer's superb The Boston Strangler in 1968, but no matter. Mann's tight and stylish version of Thomas Harris's novel Red Dragon is a thoroughly fascinating work. To this day, I recall the terror felt during the early sequence when Will Graham (William Petersen) investigates the blood-soaked crime scene alone, practically whispering his version of the events into a tape recorder. It's a deeply chilling segment, and one of the first times I can recall such an investigative process shown on film.

Mann, early in his career here, still had his trademark Miami Vice: Season One & Two touches, stark colors, unique MTV-styled camera angles and the insertion of pop music at unexpected ... Read More
