VHS : Good-bye, My Lady
I was a little girl when my family saw this movie on a Friday night at the Drive-in theater when it was first released, way back when. The next morning Dad found a kennel in Santa Ana, CA that had basenji's and we went to check them out. Came home that day with a petite 6 month old red and white girl. 2 years later we added a Tri-colored boy to the family. I fell madly in love with them and always wanted one but could never afford the high price tag. Last summer I discovered the Basenji Rescue and Transport website on the internet and started watching for a red and white rescue basenji female. Thanksgiving Day "Gracie" came to live with my husband and I and we are in love. I still can't believe I have such a beautiful, sweet red girl on the end of the leash when we are out walking. Thank you ... Read More

I gather it has been remastered--but the product info states that there are 2 discs, so are there any extras? Any commentary tracks? Those of us who love the film await word the way a reclusive film star awaits a simian undertaker!!

Acting at it's best. So well written and So well performed. Outstanding movie with and outstanding ending. Recommend to all. It was written and performed for the stage and brought to the screen. Many of the orignal performers from the stage such as Nancy Kelly and Patty McCormack lead an all star cast. Eileen Heckart personifies a distraught mother who has lost her only child as she consumes drink after drink in an intoxicating paranoia against Rhoda as she searches for the truth of the death of her son. I always like Eileen, she played a terffic part in the Fugitve episodes with David Janssen as nun on her way to renounce her vows. 2-Part Episode: Angels Travel on Lonely Roads. And Rhoda, well she is just the perfect little thing, I love her to death!

Paulette Goddard was the frontrunner to play Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind" until Vivien Leigh pipped her at the post. Four years later, Goddard finally got the chance to play another firebrand Southern belle in Cecil B. DeMille's REAP THE WILD WIND, a costume adventure with the emphasis on costume--and filmed in glowing early Technicolor.

Goddard plays Loxi Claiborne, the feisty manager of a ship salvage company in 1840s Key West, Florida. Loxi falls in love with Captain Jack Stuart (John Wayne); but later finds herself caught under the spell of his attractive arch-rival, Steve Tolliver (Ray Milland). Playing one man off the other, Loxi gets caught in the middle of a dangerous battle between rival shipping companies, masterminded by scheming King Cutler (Raymond Massey).

Really boring film. It is nothing but Hollywood insider humor (and most of that is nothing but petty bitchery) and cameos. If you like to see "stars" sitting around talking (blah, blah, blah) and think that is funny, by all means - this is the film for you.

VHS : 20 Million Miles to Earth
In the late 60's, I remember Saturday mornings, sitting in my PJ's, eating a bowl of cereal and watching this film(and many like it)on my living room floor! My family didn't have a color set until 1971, so I thought every movie was in B&W. I actually love B&W as it seems to add something to my favotite old horror films like Frankenstein and The Wolfman. On the other hand, Ray Harryhausen's work seems to be made for color, so I was pretty excited to see this.... if it was done right. Not being a fan of colorization, having Ray Harryhausen overseeing this project made a big difference to me.

****The Film****This is one of my favorite monster movies with one of Ray's most memorable creatures. The Ymir is an interesting and cool looking creature from Venus who grows rapidly in Earth's atmosphere. Not since King ... Read More

VHS : Deadly Mantis (1957)
For my money, The Deadly Mantis is one of the better American monster movies of the 1950s. I really don't know why it is overshadowed even by the clearly inferior likes of Attack of the Giant Leeches, The Killer Shrews, and Giant Gila Monster (B&W). The Deadly Mantis follows the standard script, but it held off from showing the monster for over half an hour, allowing the military brains and scientists ample time to come up with a theory as to just what they were facing. Perhaps more importantly, the giant praying mantis looks pretty impressive - I'm not saying that people left the theatre believing that a giant mantis might pop up at any minute, but he's about one hundred times more realistic than the likes of the giant grasshoppers from Beginning of the End (Special Edition), even when he's climbing a national monument.

When I was a kid they used to run Sci-Fi and horror movies on Saturday mornings. Some were truly excellent such as The Thing, or The Day The Earth Stood Still. Other times, they were frankly pretty cheesy. Still, when your a kid that's part of their charm. The special effects here weren't half bad for it's day. I think that this film should be in every serious sci-fi buffs collection. Speaking of cult classics, here's a hot tip: Amazon has "An Occurence At Owl Creek Bridge"!! You haven't seen it? It's the one short film that will haunt you for life. SEE IT!

This story, based on the novel by southern writer Eudora Welty is charming and humorous. The first half is decidedly better than the second and the ending could have been smoother. But the character of Uncle Daniel and Bonnie Dee Peacock could not have been portrayed any better. The dim Uncle Daniel, and the not-too-bright Bonnie Dee are perfect renditions of the Welty characters I imagined. This a story of humor and southern charm, with some excellent performances!
