This picture is dedicated to the US Army Air Corps officers, enlisted men, and ground crews. Blackie and Heathcliff are working at a carnival. There is an old attraction that uses physical comedy. The owner fires the boys, they dine out to celebrate. The boys will join an air academy for training. There are more comic skits at the lunch counter. The boys get in without a pass, but there is a price. More comic skits follow, then a song and dance. There is a comic skit on the telephone. Mr. Roberts knows his technical details. An accident makes Heathcliff tired. Later we see a carnival that provided entertainment in those days. Heathcliff enters a haunted house. The confusion over the twin sisters ends.

Jinx Roberts figures out how to make Jim Morrison fly solo! Jim walks away from his ... Read More

The film is over-long, sometimes boring and a typically over-produced, shiny, uninspired MGM picture. But because of Jeannette MacDonald it is ok. One has to wait long until the eccentric Busby Berkeley finale. It is one of his lesser known works but his genius triumphs even at MGM! It is a must for all Berkeley fans and I highly recommend the film because of this few minutes!

Colonel J.R. Andrews is head of a radio broadcasting company. A new writer is hired for a murder mystery show. Chick and Mervin are working in a drugstore, and put on their comic skits. The film shows how a radio mystery show is produced. But Colonel Andrews is murdered by a clever plot. There is another skit on the use of words that sound alike. [The jokes show the attitudes of those days.] Can life imitate art? Misunderstandings provide comedy. Strange events cause Mervin to look for clues in a closet; he finds something that doesn't belong there. "Which way did they go?" Is there a secret in Colonel Andrews' office? Is the murderer after this secret?

There is confusion in the dark. The elevator is manually controlled. Could a plain language code be used on radio? [Yes.] The acrobats ... Read More

VHS : Miss Annie Rooney
Shirley Temple starred in this movie when she was at that difficult age when most child stars founder and disappear forever. It's a pleasant, easy to watch movie, although today's kids probably won't care for it much. Annie Rooney (Shirley Temple), the daughter of an unsuccessful inventor, and her friends meet at each other's houses to dance and have fun. Listen for the forties slang! When Annie meets a new boy, and a rich one at that, she teaches him the slang and the dances and he becomes infatuated. This movie has some well-known character actors and some young actors who became better known later. Annie's best friend is a scream. It's particularly funny to hear Annie's father trying to interpret what the kids' slang is saying ("I feel like I'm hearing a foreign language!") with the grandfather's help. And Temple ... A must see not only for Crawford fans but for the student of film making.
That constant rain fall is brilliant. I doubt that the 'new sound' audience of the 1930s were prepared.
