VHS : Blue Dahlia
The Blue Dahlia is a quintessential film noir, one of the great films that defined the genre. Army men return from World War II to find their wives drunk and cheating with scumbag jazz club owners. Whether this film has not been released on DVD in the U.S. is quite curious, considering almost every film noir has been burned onto DVD in various collections of the genre. My guess is that Turner owns the film, and hopes to air it only on TCM, or the potentially racist comment in the film has people worried. There were racists in the 1940s, and denying it by not releasing a film is pretty silly.

VHS : Babe Ruth Story
This is a documentary. The history, only romanced a little by Hollywood.
I never saw Babe play. I am 61. But my father sat right behind him in center field, at the Stadium in New York. This movie was one of the first movies I ever saw. The nuns played it for us once a year, at school, because of the message at the end of the film. Me, as a regular human, give the film 5 stars. This is on my "Top-Five-of-all-time" list

VHS : Boys' Night Out
There were a lot of humorous surprises in this movie. For starters, James Garner lives with his mother and is a nerdy weather buff! Then there's Kim Novak, who takes to the role of a seductress with aplomb, only a minute after she arrives for what she thought was an apartment inspection. The 1950s-style paternalism all the men dish out to Novak in spite of their lurid extramarital fantasies is downright charming. I give this movie two thumbs up, and am sure you will too.

VHS : Two Years Before the Mast (B&W)
An all star cast under the fine direction of John Farrow gave a quality performance in "Two Years Before the Mast" based on a 1840 novel by Richard Henry Dana. Dana's book was an expose of the deplorable conditions that merchant seaman were forced to live under while asea and under the orders of the ship's captain.

In this film Alan Ladd stars as Charles Stewart a spoiled dandy and son of a wealthy Boston shipping magnate in the 1830's. He accidently is pressed into service aboard one of his father's merchant ships the S.S. Pilgrim. The Pilgrim is commanded by the unsympathetic Capt. Thompson played marvelously by Howard DaSilva. DaSilva cares nothing about the well being of his crew allowing them to starve, contract scurvey and get flogged mercilessly. Also aboard is author ... Read More

VHS : Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
This film, "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, is so very romantic and charming. It is a great escape movie into a wonderful land of Camelot, that makes oyu bleieve it could really be. Rhonda Fleming and BIng Crosby are both wonderful in it and a very romantic and beautiful couple. The song "Once and for Always," is one of th elovliest an dmost heartfelt songs ever. It's a must see film for the entire family, an done never tires of watching it. Each time of viewing it is like the first time. Bing has some catchy tunes and is great as Hank the machanic. It has a charm and old fashion romance that is so often lacking in today's films.

6.I'll Be Yours starring: Deanna Durbin, Tom Drake, William Bendix, Adolphe Menjou, Walter Catlett

VHS : I'll Be Yours
This sweet and old-fashioned offering from the lovely Deanna Durbin is very much a film of another time. A simple and liesurely paced film about a small town girl going to the big city shortly after her father's passing, there is a sweet innocence to both the humor and the love story that should not be confused as lightweight. Based on a screenplay by the great Preston Sturges, the story really gets going slowly and Deanna carries the first portion of this film on her considerable charm. By the end, you'll be smiling, glad you stuck around for a film that remains true to its intent.

Deanna is Louise Dinglebusher (!), a girl from the small town of Cobleskil not sure what to expect from the city of New York. Eating on a budget after landing a job as an usherette through a fellow Cobleskil ... Read More

The is a great movie for a WWII buff. I saw it first in our local movie theater back in the 1950s and really enjoyed it. It is, of course, somethng of a propoganda piece but still a great movie to watch. I highly recommend it.

DVD quality was fine.

VHS : Lifeboat (The Hitchcock Collection)
Sometimes greatness can be achieved in a singular way, even if the totality of a work of art is not great. This came to me upon watching one of my dad's all time favorite films, and one which I have watched several dozen times in my life- Alfred Hitchcock's 1944 black and white Lifeboat, which is also one of the three or four best films Hitchcock ever made, and did receive Academy Award nominations for Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Screenplay. While I am not a rabid devotee of Hitchcock, because most of his thrillers are filled with rather cardboard cutout characters, despite the films' technical excellence, this is still probably my favorite Hitchcock film; not only because of the memories of watching it with my dad, but because it is one of the least Hitchcockian films in his canon ... Colonel J.R. Andrews is head of a radio broadcasting company. A new writer is hired for a murder mystery show. Chick and Mervin are working in a drugstore, and put on their comic skits. The film shows how a radio mystery show is produced. But Colonel Andrews is murdered by a clever plot. There is another skit on the use of words that sound alike. [The jokes show the attitudes of those days.] Can life imitate art? Misunderstandings provide comedy. Strange events cause Mervin to look for clues in a closet; he finds something that doesn't belong there. "Which way did they go?" Is there a secret in Colonel Andrews' office? Is the murderer after this secret?

There is confusion in the dark. The elevator is manually controlled. Could a plain language code be used on radio? [Yes.] The acrobats show their ... Read More
