I first saw this series while living in Japan as a child. Ever since, I dreamed of living on a ranch. I loved the book also, which I read after watching the series. I'll always remember the Crown V fondly, especially now that I've married into a cattle ranching family. :) This is an excellent series for children over the age 10. There's enough adventure for all ages. The characters through the decades resonate throughout the whole series. It makes me want to read the book again.

For such a distinguished actor, James Earl Jones has made some really forgettable movies, and I would count Grim Prairie Tales among them. This 1990 anthology piece seems to have garnered decent reviews, but I personally can't see how this movie could impress anyone. Just because it's different - a horror/Western anthology which eschews the standard formula of "it is the story, not he who tells it" (i.e., the two storytellers are more interesting than the stories they tell) - doesn't mean it's very good. Without the overpowering presence of James Earl Jones as an uncouth, darkly mysterious range ride, I daresay Grim Prairie Tales would border on the unbearable. Real Genius was the 1st time I saw Val Kilmer. He is very funny. At a school for genius young people, you see how some of them cope with their skills. Val was once a very serious student & almost went brain dead. Now he copes by being a funny goof-off. I enjoyed the antics & behaviors that are brought out of these real genius's.

Does anyone know if this DVD has been re-released? I have the original DVD when it first came out and you have to flip the DVD over to see the last 20 minutes of the movie and that's not cool.

Richard Gere is the tough Chicago cop who goes to the Big Easy to track down the killer of his partner. This killer is a much feared hood in New Orleans named Losado. While down there Gere runs into Kim Basinger, a "slave" of Losado's, and he becomes determined to free her as well as kill Losado. This is all very typical thriller fare, although it can be pretty suspenseful at times--especially in the bayous and, of course, the big ending where Gere gets his man in a nail-biting shoot out and fire. But after you've seen this, ask yourself the next day how much you can remember. Note: There's a scene in the picture that's stolen directly from Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps": Gere and Basinger are handcuffed together as they make their escape through the swamps.
