VHS : Menotti - Amahl and the Night Visitors
I remember watching and loving this opera every year when I was a child. I was disappointed when the network stopped airing it. Now that Mr. Menotti has passed away, perhaps the news coverage will encourage the production of a good DVD version of this classic. Hope someone's listening!

VHS : The Gershwins' Porgy & Bess / Rattle, White, Haymon, Glyndebourne Opera
I read your reviews of P&B productions and settled on this one because of a glowing report by someone. I was very disappointed. First, it was at least 30 minutes too long. It could easily have been an hour shorter with nothing important left out. Good photography and sound, good singing and acting for the most part, but "Summertime" was far too slow in tempo. Maddeningly slow. George would never have allowed that. But the worst was the ending, with Porgy suddenly able to walk, just like Amahl! How corny can you get??? What made the producers think they could improve the story? And why a cane instead of a wheeled cart? What makes modern fools think they can improve on a classic? A fatal delusion. I'll have to keep looking for a better production. Any suggestions?
Richard

VHS : The Apartment
Very, very good and a bit sad. And most frighteningly there is a scene early on in the movie that shows show Jack Lemmon working in an insurance company in a sea of desk. I would say "pre-cubicle days" but it was nearly duplicated at an insurance company in New York in real life around 1989. Had I seen the movie beforehand I would not have been able to work there without giggleing every time I entered that gigantic room.

Fred MacMurray was wonderful, and in this movie I can really see what people saw in Shirley MacLaine. And it really started me off on watching more movies by Billy Wilder. Which are adult films in the right sense of the word. If you are 16, the odds really are that you are just going to "get it". There are things to laugh at, but the horror aspect of it all might not be apparent. ... Read More

VHS : Othello
As wonderful a production of Othello as there can be found. Plus, it's shot as a stage production which gives it leverage as an educational tool.

VHS : Holy Man
Obviously you want to like `Holy Man'. It stars Eddie Murphy, one of Hollywood's funniest working comedians, and his name alone should warrant honest laughs. Sadly `Holy Man' fails to deliver the goods on just about every level.

I remember laughing out loud once when I saw this movie in the theater, and when I watched this debacle again the other night that outward expression of enjoyment was turned inward and remained one of those thoughts, you know the ones, the `oh that was kinda funny' thought that never goes anywhere but your mind. `Holy Man' could have been a brilliantly crafted satire but instead it becomes a joke, but not the funny kind; more like a painfully unfunny joke that leaves the audience uncomfortably frustrated.

So `Holy Man' stars Murphy as G, a religious eccentric who is making his way ... Read More

VHS : Gambling Lady
The daughter of a poor but honest cardsharp, whose funeral expenses are paid by his friends, Lady Lee (Stanwyck) is determined to improve her lot. Eventually, she meets wholesome Joel McCrea and yearns for the respectable life..............Instrinsically, GAMBLING LADY is as absurd as it sounds but the honesty of Stanwyck's performance is so forthright that it brings conviction to the role in which she plays. Her performance is sure, colorful and convincing; she makes Lee a believable figure (which is no small feat). There is a quiet and forceful magic in Stanwyck's impersonation of the title role, and the movie moves quickly; she handles every emotional phase of the film story with utmost skill and holds the audience sympathy throughout the picture. Stanwyck looks every bit the gambling lady because of Orry-Kelly's chic wardrobe. The ... Read More
