VHS : Mickey's Christmas Carol
"Mickey's Christmas Carol" is a retelling of Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" in animation with familiar Disney cartoon characters in all the roles.

Scrooge McDuck leads as Ebenezer Scrooge, greedy London businessman and miser, with Mickey Mouse as his underpaid and underappreciated clerk Bob Crachit and Donald Duck as Scrooge's nephew Fred. Goofy is Jacob Marley, Scrooge's dead partner, come to warn Scrooge on Christmas Eve of the terrible fate awaiting him in the afterlife if he does not reform his ways. As in Dickens' novel, Scrooge is visted by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, and learns his lesson.

This is family entertainment with a lesson. In just 25 minutes, Disney has managed to capture the essentials of the story, hopefully ... Read More

VHS : The Paint Job
Roundly applauded by the English press, this American Independent has received little attention here--certainly not the attention it deserves. Writer/Director Taav has created a sexual landscape so fraught with suspicion and confusion that no character, no matter how well-meaning, and no action, no matter how benign, can be taken at face value. This is a wonderfully written, visually imaginative low budget film that is alternately quite funny and quite frightening. Will Patton and Bebe Neuwirth are excellent as the two lovers; Ted Levine, in an uncredited role, is riotous; and the climactic battle between Patton and his boss, Robert Pastorelli, is startling and original. I strongly recommend that you see it if you haven't, and that you see it again if you have.

We borrowed this at the library and wanted to have a copy for our own and arrggh!--it's not available. Bummer.

Everything everyone wrote is true. The animation *is* done with older technology, but it is made with such love and attention to detail that it is timeless.

My children, boy and girl (3 and 5) just adore this video. My five year old even watchs the John Matthews/director's segment, on how the animation was done, over and over.

Five Stars. If you like our two amphibian friends, and you can find this video, buy it. It is top notch fun.

VHS : The Karate Kid Part II
Following Daniel-San's (Macchio) triumphant, albeit incredibly improbable, victory at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament, there is little time to celebrate. Mr. Miyagi (Morita) gets a letter from Okinawa informing him that his father is dying. He knows this is a potentially deadly situation because of an old grudge with his former best friend Sato. Nonetheless, Miyagi let's the recently dumped Daniel-San (it was only a matter of time before Elisabeth Shue realized she was dating a sissy) come along for the trip.

Upon arriving in Okinawa, Miyagi soon realizes that he has very little time. Not only will his father die very soon, but his former best friend Sato - who incidentally has a watermelon for a head - wants to fight him to the death. It turns out that Miyagi left his homeland ... Read More
