VHS : Lonely Are the Brave
'Lonely are the Brave' was the film that Kirk Douglas, himself, regards as his favorite. No, it's not a big Hollywood flash like 'Spartacus' but it is the subtle and tragic rendention of a time and life style already gone. It's a tale of the passing of the old West and the disappearance of men--independent men--who couldn't or wouldn't change.

Douglas--Jack Burns--in the film is a man intolerant of rules, fences and civilization. He's a cowboy with an ideology. His sense of honor is antequated, perhaps, but all the more powerful because of it. In the interest of freedom he makes a series of preventable and deliberate mistakes. He breaks into jail to save an old friend, only to find that his friend doesn't want saving. Burns then breaks out of jail to be pursued across the ... Read More

How can it be that Walter Matthau's best performance, especially a comedy performance, is not available on DVD? It's a shame, because this is arguably the most brilliant dark comedy from that wonderful golden age of grown-up films from the mid 60s to the mid 70s. This movie is way too funny and brilliant to be this undercover and cult. Elaine May is to comedy what Coppola and Scorsese were to drama. Her writing is as good as comedy writing gets, and her performance gives a glimpse at how wonderful a comic actress she really is. No B.S. either. This one of the great comedies. Can't believe it's not on dvd. Not to be missed. I remember seeing this on tv when I was a little girl and thinking, that is a wonderful world those two people live in. It played the midnight show in college and the crowd loved ... Read More

VHS : Hello Dolly
"Hello, Dolly!" is one of those huge-budgeted musicals made after the incredible success of "The Sound of Music." Lightning was reluctant to strike twice, however, and subsequent, bloated musicals like "Paint Your Wagon," "Dr. Dolittle," "Star" and "Darling Lili" tanked at the box office. "Hello, Dolly!" seemed a safe bet. It was based on a hit Broadway show, starred Barbra Streisand -- fresh from her Oscar-winning role in "Funny Girl" -- in the title role, had a score by Jerry Herman and a script by Ernest Lehman ("North By Northwest"), and was directed by Gene Kelly, a guy who knew his way around musical movies. Yet the result was an overly long dud with Streisand monumentally miscast. Dolly should have been played by an older actress. Streisand mugs unrestrainedly and her performance never convinces. ... This is a Lemmon-Matthau classic. This rates equal if not better the the grumpy old men flicks. Jack Lemmon is one of the best actors of all time and Matthau is superb as well. I can't understand how this is not available on DVD.

This is an odd choice to get the full Criterion treatment as it's a fairly tame cold war romantic comedy thriller with a very low-key romance and few real thrills or laughs. Charade this ain't. Good location shooting, and it's interesting to think there was a time when a mainstream entertainment would cater to a mature audience. But, be prepared for a very mellow affair.

Not sure why this merits an "R" rating as all Ned Beatty's profanities have been very obviously overdubbed.

VHS : JFK - The Director's Cut
This film is one that requires the watcher to immerse oneself in another world. A world of cold war tensions, clandestine operations, high level plants and communist witch hunts. Historical facts not with standing, it is a very enjoyable film and is very well done. The pacing and character development is second to none. The movie is star studded and the talent of those present is easily recognizable.
It does not have 21 cars exploding, bullet time kung fu or little kids out smarting adults, so I suspect the general public of subhuman idiots that is today's movie watcher may complain that it's boring.
I highly recommend it

VHS : Candy (1968) (Ws)
The title character of this wacky, uneven comedy, Candy Christian, has a beguiling innocence and nubile figure that entices every man she meets. Her manner with them is inquisitive and soft.
The men are prominent and include Doctor Krankheit, a famous neuro-surgeon (James Coburn) and the Indian guru Grindle (Marlon Brando). They urgently want a piece of Candy, but their feelings for her are ambivalent because their desire is confounded by their professional etiquette or dignity, like a skin they wear as a matter of career survival, but which is incongruent with making love to such a free spirit. As a result, they are strict and controlling, as if to banish doubt. Coburn is good; Brando is a far cry from his Terry Malloy and Stanley Kowalski roles and is the funniest person in the movie.
