VHS : Candy (1968) (Ws)
The title character of this wacky, uneven comedy, Candy Christian, has a beguiling innocence and nubile figure that entices every man she meets. Her manner with them is inquisitive and soft.
The men are prominent and include Doctor Krankheit, a famous neuro-surgeon (James Coburn) and the Indian guru Grindle (Marlon Brando). They urgently want a piece of Candy, but their feelings for her are ambivalent because their desire is confounded by their professional etiquette or dignity, like a skin they wear as a matter of career survival, but which is incongruent with making love to such a free spirit. As a result, they are strict and controlling, as if to banish doubt. Coburn is good; Brando is a far cry from his Terry Malloy and Stanley Kowalski roles and is the funniest person in the movie. ... VHS : Devil & Daniel Webster
This movie is two parts good ol' slice of Americana and one part gripping ghost story, as a man named Jabez (his name is but one of the many comparisons this movie will make to Job) Stone, in a fit of rage, attracts the devil with the curse "I'd sell my soul to the devil for two pennies!" He's lucky enough that the conversation goes further than that and he gets to trade his soul ("merely a small thing") for seven years good luck and a pile of gold up front. Of course these narratives are always very bizarre to me: doesn't the devil appearing in anthropomorphic form basically immediately alert the character, who exists obviously in a Christian world with access to the texts, that the devil's own very existence proves the existence of an anthropomorphic God who will hold true to the promises ... Metaldiva confession: I love good classic movies, this is a gem! This movie begins in the depression and 1933 presidential election of a political party figurehead, Walter Houston, who won making deals and assurances not to knock the status quo. The character is a shrewd politician unwilling to make any changes to alleviate the plight of the men in "unemployed camps", people having their homes foreclosed, stamp out bootleggers nor help to get the economy going for the middle classes and poor (sound familiar?) He is a single man, satisfied that his rich peers stay rich and even flaunts an illicit relationship with a woman of questionable origin and appoints her personal secretary. His first press meeting consisted of a few statements inferring that all the problems in the country were local, he ... Read More

Serpentine story of how three gold-diggers are perverted by their success. Well-acted and strikingly directed. Has interesting parallels to Peckinpah's "The Wild Bunch" in its contrasting portrayal of Mexicans.

1943's "Edge of Darkness" portrays the acute plight of a small Norwegian village trapped under the thumb of brutal Nazi occupation during the Second World War. The presentation by veteran director Lewis Milestone is especially poignant; modern viewers must remember that the liberation of Norway was still an uncertain two years off when the movie was released.

Errol Flynn leads in an understated but solid performance as an ordinary and underachieving fisherman who is forced by circumstances to mature and become the leader of the local resistance. Walter Huston and Ruth Gordon turn in strong supporting roles as the brave town doctor and his wife. Ann Sheridan plays Flynn's love-interest, who runs afoul of the occupying troops and exacts a terrible revenge.

This movie is noteworthy for its fully developed ... Read More

I didn't expect to find this so moving! I initially wanted to watch it for Reba McEntire. (I'm a fairly new Reba fan and I've been trying to watch and listen to everything of hers I can find.) Well, she is only in about 15 minutes of the movie, but the performances were all superb and I'm glad I bothered to watch the whole thing.
